Valentín Arregui Paz is a political dissident jailed at the tail end of the Dirty War. In his cramped cell, he shares a space with the flamboyant, quick-witted Luis Molina, whose chatter and showy personality grate on Valentín at first. Yet Molina wins Valentín over by offering to tell the story of his favorite Hollywood musical, The Kiss of the Spider Woman, a film-within-a-film that will become the lifeline of their relationship and a window into a larger, dangerous world.

In Molina’s vivid retelling, the in-universe film positions Aurora, a successful magazine publisher, at the center of a dramatic romance. Molina casts himself as Kendall Nesbitt, Aurora’s loyal assistant and a closeted homosexual, while Valentín is cast as Armando, a photographer who becomes Aurora’s lover. As the story unfolds, Aurora and Armando travel to their home village to shoot a piece, bringing them face to face with old flames and new dangers. In this imagined world, Paulina, Armando’s former flame, and the hard-edged gangster Johnny Desiderio pose new temptations and threats, testing the lovers’ bond and their sense of loyalty. The characters collide against a backdrop of suspicion and surveillance, a prison warden’s watchful eye, and the ever-present atmosphere of political danger.

Molina’s narration serves a double purpose: it entertains Valentín and distracts him from the harshness of prison life, but it also becomes a live map of how the two men might survive and find love amidst oppression. Molina secretly hopes to gain parole by feeding information to the warden, yet his growing care for Valentín complicates his plan. As Molina’s tale deepens, the line between fiction and reality blurs, and the two men begin to recognize the depth of their own feelings for one another.

The in-universe plot thickens as the lovers uncover a village legend—the Spider Woman—that supposedly guards the community by demanding the sacrifice of a native lover. Aurora senses that Armando could be pulled away by forces beyond their control, prompting desperate attempts to keep him close. Kendall’s brittle loyalty cracks under pressure, and he betrays the couple to Johnny Desiderio, forcing Aurora and Armando to seek safety in the jungle. In a tense, biodiverse escape, they confront the Spider Woman; the creature tests their love, but Kendall’s sacrifice preserves Armando’s life and the pair press on.

As anti-government protests intensify, the warden finally grants Molina parole. The nearness of separation presses Valentín and Molina to confront their feelings, and the two men admit that they have fallen in love. They become lovers the night before Molina’s release, a private triumph against the bleak reality around them. Molina promises to keep communicating with Valentín’s political circle after he’s free, passing along information as a way to stay connected to the struggle.

Once released, Molina returns to his family, even as the warden’s watchful eye doesn’t truly disappear. Behind the scenes, the guards arrange to shadow him, hoping he will lead them to Valentín’s network. In a later attempt to make contact, Molina passes information to Valentín’s comrades in a cinema, and the two lovers are pulled into a dangerous escape. In the chaos that follows, one of Valentín’s allies fires at Molina, and the window dresser dies with his story unfinished in the air. As he lies dying, Molina imagines himself returning to the embrace of the Spider Woman, and Valentín learns of his death only when a newspaper is left for him in his prison cell.

In October 1983, the military junta is toppled and Valentin is freed along with the others. The inmates spill out into the world, reuniting with their families in a cascade of relief and grief. Valentin, holding onto Molina’s red scarf, raises it in the air and, with a trembling voice, delivers a final, aching farewell to the man he loved.

We made it, my love. We made it.
