Larry Crowne, a middle-aged Navy veteran, faces the shock of being dismissed from his job at a big-box store, primarily due to his lack of a college education, despite his extensive experience and dedication. Recently divorced and living in solitude, Larry finds himself struggling to secure new employment and risks losing his home. Fortunately, his neighbor, Lamar, encourages him to enroll at East Valley Community College and pursue his education for a brighter future.

With the limited funds from his unemployment benefits and unable to afford the upkeep of his SUV, Larry opts to buy a scooter from Lamar. As he immerses himself in college life, he becomes a part of a vibrant community filled with students eager to improve their lives. A playful classmate, Talia, affectionately nicknames him “Lance Corona.” Larry’s coursework includes public speaking, taught by Mercedes Tainot, and economics, led by Dr. Ed Matsutani. While he initially finds himself floundering through his first speech on making restaurant-quality French toast—a topic he knows well due to his 20 years as a navy cook—he excels in economics, consistently providing insightful answers to the assigned readings.

Meanwhile, Mercedes struggles with her own personal issues; she drinks at home after class due to her unsatisfactory marriage to Dean, a former professor-turned-blogger who spends his days indulging in internet browsing rather than engaging with her needs.

Invited by Talia, Larry joins a club of scooter enthusiasts led by Talia’s boyfriend, Dell Gordo. Talia takes it upon herself to revamp Larry’s appearance and living space. In a stroke of luck, his friend Frank, who operates a diner, offers him a job to help with his mounting financial difficulties resulting from his prior role as a Navy cook.

A pivotal moment occurs when, after a disastrous fight with Dean, Mercedes finds herself alone at a bus stop, where Larry and his scooter gang come to her aid. He graciously offers her a ride home, which she reluctantly accepts. Their journey takes a sudden turn when they witness Dean being arrested for driving under the influence.

Upon arriving at her doorstep, Mercedes invites Larry to share a kiss, leading to a passionate moment between them. However, when the idea of intimacy arises, Larry, demonstrating respect, politely declines as he does not wish to take advantage of her vulnerable state. The following day reveals chaos when Dean discovers that all of his possessions have been thrown onto the front lawn.

Facing the possibility of losing his home, Larry applies the wisdom he’s gained from his economics class to navigate a strategic foreclosure. Meanwhile, Mercedes mistakenly believes that Larry is romantically involved with the much younger Talia, a misconception that leaves Larry feeling disheartened about the budding chemistry he had sensed with Mercedes. Refocusing on his studies and new job becomes paramount.

As events unfold, Mercedes encounters Talia, who informs her of her plans to drop out and start a thrift store, leading to the realization that Larry and Talia’s relationship is purely platonic. Subsequently, Frances, Mercedes’ English teacher and friend, visits in a show of support during her divorce.

With finals upon them, Larry’s major speech presentation arrives at the very end of the session. With confidence, he delivers a heartfelt speech that weaves together his travels during his Navy career with the themes from his classmates’ projects. The speech earns him enthusiastic applause from his peers and an A-plus grade from Mercedes, who is gradually finding her joy and passion for teaching again.

Not long after, Mercedes and Frances pay Larry a visit at his diner, where she expresses how impressed she is with his performance as a student. In return, Larry acknowledges Mercedes as an outstanding teacher. As the next term begins, while some of Mercedes’ past students sign up for her Shakespeare class, Larry is seen enrolling in a second-semester economics course with Dr. Matsutani instead.

In a delightful twist, Mercedes discovers a sweet note from Larry inviting her over for French toast at his new apartment. Upon her arrival, they share a tender kiss, signaling the beginning of a blossoming relationship filled with hope and new beginnings.
