The cosmic journey begins on a humble spaceship, where a quartet of extraterrestrial beings - Bernard, Sandra, Desmond, and Julian - converge at a refuelling station. As the tediousness of their stay sets in, three of the aliens (Bernard, Sandra, Desmond, and Julian) engage in an impromptu experiment with the ship's controls while Bernard ventures outside to indulge in some intergalactic recreation. Unbeknownst to them, this casual tinkering has far-reaching consequences - they inadvertently sever Bernard's connection to their vessel, leaving him stranded as they crash-land on a massive blue planet (Earth).

The trio of aliens finds themselves in the United Kingdom, where they are catapulted to fame upon arrival, despite bringing no groundbreaking revelations or technological innovations to the people of Earth. Instead, they capitalize on their novelty, securing a manager (Jones) and raking in wealth as fans flock to auditoriums simply to catch a glimpse of them.

Meanwhile, Bernard's predicament takes a drastic turn when he arrives on American soil via an unexpected means of transportation. Despite being the most cerebral member of the group, he is denied celebrity status and instead struggles with poverty and homelessness, even spending a brief stint in a mental institution. It isn't until the film's climax that Bernard reunites with his fellow travelers, still reeling from their divergent experiences.

As the others bask in their newfound fame, they deliberately omit mentioning the fourth member of their party, fearing that introducing Bernard would dilute their popularity and celebrity status.
