Of Gods and Men 2011

The film begins with a profound quote from the Book of Psalms: > “I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.” (Psalm 82:6–7). This sets the tone for a story that unfolds within the tranquil lives of monks engaged in prayer, offering medical help, and connecting with the community around them. However, their serene existence is soon threatened by a rising Islamic fundamentalist group.

As tensions escalate, the monks face a pivotal choice: whether to seek protection from the corrupt civil authorities or remain steadfast in their commitment to their faith and the local people. The elected leader, Christian, portrayed by Lambert Wilson, sides against seeking external aid, prompting a divide among the monks regarding their future in Algeria. They grapple with fear and uncertainty, leading to intense discussions on loyalty and courage.

On Christmas Eve, the situation intensifies when a militant group, led by Ali Fayattia, forcefully enters the monks’ compound, demanding the services of their doctor and access to vital medical supplies. With a resolve that surprises even the invaders, Christian stands firm in his refusal, using the Quran to illustrate the monks’ goodwill. This act earns a flicker of respect from Fayattia, who withdraws but later faces a tragic fate at the hands of government forces.

Despite the looming danger, the monks ultimately arrive at a collective understanding of the moral imperative to continue their lives in solidarity with the local community, even as threats of violence and death encroach upon them. The story culminates in a harrowing nighttime raid, during which the majority of the monks are seized and taken hostage. As they embark on a chilling journey through the snow, their fate hangs by a thread. The film closes with the poignant spiritual testament of Prior Christian de Chergé, penned with remarkable bravery in the face of impending mortality.
