Jean, played by Gad Elmaleh, is a reserved waiter and bartender at an upscale French hotel, feeling utterly out of place among the high-society clients he serves. One night, while tending to a nearly deserted bar, he receives an invitation from an elderly guest to take a moment for himself. Falling asleep on the bar’s sofa, he is blissfully unaware of the unfolding drama around him.
Enter Irene, portrayed by Audrey Tautou, a stunning young woman skilled in the art of seduction. With a reputation for charming wealthy men into financing her lavish lifestyle, Irene is currently with the older Jacques, who promises to celebrate her birthday in style. However, after a night of indulgence, Jacques passes out before fulfilling his promise, leaving Irene alone and disappointed. She wanders into the bar, where she finds the unsuspecting Jean asleep and mistakenly perceives him as a rich patron.
Intrigued by his tuxedo, she awakens him, casually mentioning her birthday and her wish for a cocktail accompanied by music. Jean, eager to impress, concocts a champagne cocktail without revealing his true occupation. The attraction is undeniable as they share warmth and laughter, leading them to an empty suite for a night of passion. But when Irene returns a year later, she discovers Jean once more in the hotel, where Jacques is now proposing to her. Playing with the emotions of both men, Irene finds herself again caught in a tangle of relationships, succumbing to Jean’s charm and their shared desires.
When Jacques confronts her for neglecting him in favor of Jean, he ends their engagement, leaving Irene desperate. She returns to the hotel, who she persuades Jean into believing she has chosen him. Their morning, however, is abruptly interrupted by a hotel employee, revealing Jean’s reality as a mere waiter and not the wealthy man she had hoped for. Feeling betrayed and disillusioned, Irene retreats, spending her day trying to rekindle ties with affluent acquaintances but meeting with little success.
Later that day, fate intertwines their paths again at a restaurant. Despite her irritation toward Jean, she finds herself with no other option but to dine with him. Jean desperately scrambles to impress Irene, suffering the financial burden of a lavish dinner filled with her extravagant tastes, though he struggles to keep up with her demands.
As their bond deepens, Jean also becomes entangled in the life of Madeline, a rich hotel guest who offers him shelter in exchange for his companionship. The two form a unique friendship, sharing tips on how to keep their wealthy patrons pleased while also longing for a genuine connection.
Through the chaotic ups and downs, Jean and Irene’s paths continuously cross, ultimately igniting a profound attraction between them. They decide to leave their extravagant lifestyles behind to pursue a more authentic relationship and ride off together on Jean’s scooter, symbolizing their newfound freedom away from wealth and deceit. In a moment of bittersweet irony, they pay a toll with the very euro that once bought Jean just a fleeting moment with Irene, marking a new chapter in their lives filled with genuine love and connection.
