Hal Hefner, a fifteen-year-old student from Plainsboro, New Jersey, struggles with a notable stutter. His home life is chaotic, featuring an older brother, Earl, who is an obsessive-compulsive kleptomaniac, and a father, Doyle, who has left following a nasty argument. Meanwhile, Hal’s mother, Juliet, begins dating Heston’s father, who’s his classmate.

One day, while riding the school bus, Hal encounters Ginny Ryerson, an articulate and competitive debate team star. She invites him to take the place of her former partner, Ben Wekselbaum, who abruptly dropped out of school after faltering during a major debate competition. Initially hesitant, Hal finds himself charmed by Ginny’s confidence and agrees to team up with her. Together, they prepare for an upcoming tournament, debating whether the federal government should endorse teaching sexual abstinence in public schools. Despite their dedication, Hal’s stutter becomes an obstacle during practice. Overwhelmed, he hides in a janitorial closet, where Ginny finds him. They share a hopeful kiss, but soon after, she stops communicating with him. Ginny’s parents assure Hal that she’s confident in their progress and will join him for the tournament.

On tournament day, Coach Lumbly informs Hal that Ginny has transferred to Townsend Prep. Hal is paired with Heston but struggles with his speech. After consulting his therapist for advice, he tries singing his speech or adopting a foreign accent. Consequently, the day does not go well for Hal and Heston, while Ginny triumphs, winning a trophy that mysteriously vanishes. Coach Lumbly informs Hal that Ginny’s recruitment was merely a mean prank aimed at sabotaging the school’s chances. in an emotional response, Hal steals a bottle of tequila from Earl and goes to Heston’s home, ultimately vandalizing Ginny’s property as she arrives home with her new partner, Ram.

As the year progresses, Hal’s mother ends her relationship with Heston’s father, motivating him to seek out Ginny and return the trophy he had stolen. Unfortunately, when he tries to apologize, she rebuffs him. Determined, Hal makes a trip to Trenton—the “Big City”—to find Ben, Ginny’s former debate partner. He persuades Ben to join him for the upcoming Policy Debate Championships as a homeschool team. To combat his stutter, Ben helps Hal craft his speech to the melody of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”.

However, during the tournament, they are disqualified on the basis that they are not actually home-schooled. Despite Ben accepting their journey as fulfilling, Hal seeks out Ginny before departing. He expresses hope for the future, while she reveals her inner conflict about betraying him. After their conversation, Hal leaves with newfound confidence, spending the evening at a nearby beach. When his father arrives to pick him up, Hal attempts to convey that life and love “shouldn’t be rocket science,” a phrase he struggles to pronounce due to his stutter.
