Plot Summary

As the specter of World War I casts its shadow over the globe, young Robert Conroy (Logan Lerman), a scrappy U.S. Army doughboy, is forever altered when a Boston Terrier puppy with an endearingly stumpy tail strays into camp at Yale University’s parade grounds. The men of the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, are in the midst of training, and Conroy seizes the opportunity to give this wayward pup a name, a sense of belonging, and a chance to embark on an adventure that would etch its mark on the annals of history.

Stubby, as Conroy dubs his new companion, may not have received formal military working dog training, but he proves an invaluable asset in the trenches of the Western Front in France. There, alongside human comrades like French poilu Gaston Baptiste (Gérard Depardieu), Stubby faces down the unforgiving conditions and displays a bravery that inspires awe.

As told through the narrative voice of Robert’s sister Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter), Stubby’s wartime exploits are nothing short of remarkable. He sniffs out incoming gas attacks with uncanny precision, locates wounded comrades in No Man’s Land, and even apprehends a German infiltrator lurking in the trenches. Back home, newspaper headlines regale readers with tales of this courageous canine’s heroics.

For his valorous actions, Stubby earns recognition as the most decorated dog in American history and the first-ever canine to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the United States Army - a testament to his unwavering spirit and unshakeable loyalty.
