Sil's Alien Encounter Quiz: Test your knowledge on the chilling narrative of 'Species' and the creation of the extraterrestrial being Sil.

What was the name given to the extraterrestrial being created by splicing DNA?

Plot Summary

The genesis of the extraterrestrial being, codenamed “Sil,” unfolded like a ticking time bomb, precipitated by humanity’s quest for intergalactic communication. In 1974, scientists launched the SETI program, broadcasting transmissions about Earth and its inhabitants, hoping to establish contact with life beyond our planet. Two decades later, the universe responded, showering them with two enigmatic signals from an alien source. The initial transmission revealed a seemingly benevolent alien species, offering blueprints for harnessing endless fuel through a methane catalyst. However, the second message carried a cryptic DNA sequence and instructions on how to integrate it with human genetic material.

Under the guidance of Xavier Fitch (), a government team embarked on a bold experiment, endeavoring to create a being with “more docile and controllable” traits by splicing alien DNA into human ova. Among the hundred experimental specimens, one ovum yielded a girl named Sil, whose physical appearance mirrored that of a normal human but accelerated through rapid maturation in mere months.

As Sil’s development progressed, her violent outbursts during sleep grew more pronounced, prompting scientists to deem her a threat to humanity. A futile attempt to eliminate her with cyanide gas only served as a catalyst for her breakout from containment. The government scrambled to assemble a team of experts: anthropologist Dr. Steven Arden (), molecular biologist Dr. Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger), empath Dan Smithson (Forest Whitaker), and mercenary Preston “Press” Lennox (Michael Madsen) – to track and neutralize the rogue being.

Sil’s slumber was punctuated by recurring visions of an alien train bearing down on her, only to awaken with tentacles bursting forth from beneath her skin. As she transformed within an organic cocoon, Sil slaughtered a train warden before emerging as a statuesque blonde woman in her early twenties. The circumstances surrounding her nudity remained shrouded in mystery, leaving room for speculation – had the cocoon destroyed her garments or had she deliberately removed them?

As Sil commandeered a train bound for Los Angeles, the government’s pursuit became an insurmountable challenge. This enigmatic being possessed unparalleled strength, intelligence, and regenerative capabilities, fueling scientists’ worst fears: that she might seduce someone to reproduce, imperiling humanity’s very existence. Sil’s lack of inhibition in dispatching those who stood in her way only intensified the sense of unease, as she hastened toward her ultimate goal – reproduction, and potentially, the extermination of her human counterparts.

As the enigmatic Sil navigates the treacherous landscape of human relationships, she embarks on a series of ill-fated trysts. Her initial attempt at mating with a stranger at a nightclub ends in brutal rejection and elimination when her instincts detect his diabetic condition. Undeterred, she targets another unsuspecting suitor, only to have her plans foiled once more by the timely intervention of Press (character) and Laura. As Sil frantically transforms into her natural form - a striking, bipedal creature with silted pupils, smooth, dark skin, and retractable tentacles stored within one of her breasts - she seeks to silence her would-be lover with a deadly grip from her tentacles, inadvertently claiming his life in the process.

Disguised by her new appearance, Sil flees into the forest, abandoning her attire in haste. Later, she undergoes a radical makeover, dying and styling her hair before developing an unsettling fascination with Press. Her seductive ploys ultimately yield success when she enthralls Arden, shedding her remaining garments as they succumb to primal urges. This fleeting intimacy results in Sil’s impregnation.

As her due date approaches, Sil dispatches Arden upon his discovery of her true nature and flees into the sewers, where she gives birth to her offspring in solitude. The rest of the team soon follows, prompting Sil to eliminate Fitch with ruthless efficiency. However, Dan’s callous act of setting fire to her infant son drives Sil to a frenzy, and she launches a furious assault on Press. Though momentarily distracted by her rage, Sil finds herself entangled with Dan’s leg as Press fires upon her with his grenade launcher, ending her life in an instant.

The film concludes with a haunting tableau: a rat savagely gnawing at one of Sil’s severed tentacles, its mutated tongue now capable of striking fear into the hearts of other rodents.
