Overall, Student of the Year 2 fails to recapture the charm of its predecessor, delivering a sequel burdened by derivative storytelling and superficial execution. Critics largely criticize its narrative simplicity, inconsistent pacing, and underdeveloped characters, while only occasional moments of high-energy drama and set-piece flair offer brief interest. Although the film presents stylish production elements and glimpses of chemistry among leads, these strengths are undermined by shallow emotional stakes and uneven craftsmanship. Net impression: underwhelming sequel with limited overall appeal and few redeeming qualities.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Student of the Year 2
Art & Craft
In terms of art and craft, the film presents visually striking production design but lacks cohesive direction and craft precision. The sprawling, couture-inspired sets contribute a flamboyant backdrop, yet the editing feels uneven and the overall visual style struggles with thematic unity. While the vibrant costumes and staging offer occasional flair, they are insufficient to overcome directional and technical inconsistency.
Character & Emotion
When it comes to character and emotion, the performances range from occasionally heartfelt to markedly superficial. The leads display intermittent chemistry, yet many supporting figures feel underdeveloped and the film rarely cultivates genuine emotional stakes. The central protagonists lack depth and the narrative offers minimal insight into their motivations. Overall, the character work falls short of establishing lasting resonance.
Story & Flow
Around story and flow, the narrative feels derivative and struggles with consistency. Critics note a simplistic plot structure focused on class conflict, with predictable turns and irregular pacing that undermine engagement. The script oscillates between high-energy sequences and flat transitional moments, offering little originality. In sum, the story framework lacks cohesion and fails to generate sustained interest.
Sensory Experience
For the sensory experience, the film delivers sporadic visual flair but offers limited auditory distinction. The soundtrack and sound design rarely stand out, blending into the background rather than enhancing scenes. The visual style relies heavily on elaborate choreography and color-saturated sequences, yet falls short in creating a unified aesthetic tone. Overall, the sensory elements feel underexploited and uneven.
Rewatch Factor
In terms of rewatch factor, the movie offers minimal incentive for repeat viewings. Occasional moments of lighthearted camaraderie and energetic set pieces provide fleeting amusement, but the lack of narrative depth and emotional engagement diminishes lasting appeal. Without substantial character growth or memorable plot developments, the film struggles to sustain interest beyond an initial viewing. Net result: low replay value.

Rohan Sachdev, portrayed by Tiger Shroff, is a diligent student at Pishorilal Chamandas College in Mussoorie. He is in a romantic relationship with Mridula Chawla, played by Tara Sutaria. However, their relationship faces a hurdle when Mridula transfers to the elite St. Teresa’s College in Dehradun, which caters to the affluent. Unable to keep up with the fees, Rohan decides to seek a scholarship under the sports quota, ultimately gaining admission to be closer to Mridula.
At St. Teresa’s, Mridula reinvented herself, taking on the name Mia Chawla. When she first encounters Rohan again, she tries to maintain distance, but their chemistry reignites as Rohan competes in the annual inter-school Dignity Cup, rapidly becoming a popular figure among students.
In this new setting, Rohan befriends Manav Singh Randhawa, a wealthy student portrayed by Aditya Seal, who has won the Student of the Year Cup twice. Despite their budding friendship, Rohan clashes with Manav’s sister, Shreya Randhawa, played by Ananya Panday, who clearly disapproves of him. During a birthday party hosted by Manav at his father’s luxury club, Shreya humiliates Rohan and his old friends, igniting Mia’s anger over Rohan’s associations. Following an incident where Rohan reports Shreya’s behavior to the principal, tensions rise leading to a significant confrontation, where Rohan ultimately apologizes to Shreya.
As the college announces a dance competition, Rohan and Mia are set to face off against Manav and Shreya. While Mia is eager to win and gain popularity, Shreya aims to prove her dance abilities to her strict father in hopes of attending a prestigious dance school in London. Unfortunately, during the contest, Mia falters, leading to Manav and Shreya’s victory. The fallout creates a rift between Rohan and Mia when he discovers her in a heartfelt embrace with Manav.
In a fit of rage, Rohan punches Manav, resulting in his expulsion from St. Teresa’s and a return to Pishorilal Chamandas College. Meanwhile, a twist unfolds as Shreya finds herself falling for Rohan, and in a surprising turn of events, she discovers that Mia deliberately missed her dance step to allow Manav to emerge victorious. Encouraged by Shreya, Rohan decides to participate in a national dance competition to finally challenge both Manav and Mia.
As Rohan and Shreya practice together, their bond deepens, igniting feelings between them. Just as Shreya is about to confess her love for Rohan, Mia returns, revealing that she still loves him and that Manav had only used her to get closer to Rohan. The trio ultimately agrees to forge a friendship. Rohan, being supportive, informs Mia’s father of her dance talents, which leads to his newfound appreciation and a promise to enroll her in a London dance school.
As the story unfolds, Rohan realizes his true feelings for Shreya. He and his teammates at Pishorilal Chamandas work tirelessly to clinch victory at the 29th Annual Inter-College Dignity Cup, a title his college has struggled to achieve for years. With Rohan’s determination and the cohesive effort of the team, they triumph over Saint Teresa, the reigning champions, and in doing so, Rohan secures the title of Student of the Year.
