As Raymond Wadsworth returns to his childhood home, he finds himself grappling with the stark truths of his family dynamics after his failed attempt at business school. His mother, Eve, a socialite, harbors a secret yearning for Hector, the rugged foreman overseeing renovations on their property. This complex sentiment remains hidden beneath her polished exterior. Meanwhile, Raymond’s father, Donald, displays his prejudices openly, having ostracized Raymond’s openly gay cousin, Freddy, from their lives.
Raymond’s struggles to rebuild his life are complicated by his rekindled romance with Becca, a former classmate now employed at the local bar. Their relationship faces challenges as Raymond finds himself clashing with Pope, an old childhood rival.
However, the Wadsworth estate soon becomes the focal point of strange occurrences following a discovery made by Hector’s crew: the skeletal remains of a child buried in a wooden box. This unsettling find is exacerbated by Hector’s decision to steal a necklace from the remains and subsequently disappear without a trace, adding a layer of mystery to the unsettling situation.
With abnormalities intensifying, Raymond receives a warning from Alphonse, one of Hector’s workers, cautioning him about disturbing the grave. Seeking support, he turns to Becca, who encourages him to reconnect with his childhood sensitivity towards the supernatural—an aspect of himself he had tried to suppress after starting medication.
As he investigates the “Longstreet Ranch 1860” label found on the coffin, Raymond uncovers a web of historical tragedies tied to his family’s past. He learns that the notorious Bogden brothers brutally murdered Ambrose Longstreet and his daughter Hannah in 1860, burying their remains on the Wadsworth property, shrouding the family in a haunting legacy.
Determined to bring peace to the restless spirit of Hannah, Raymond, with Becca’s help, delves deeper into the revelations surrounding their families. Their search leads them to the Historical Society, where they meet Cornelius—initially unhelpful but ultimately guided by his assistant, Virginia. Together, they navigate the intricacies of their histories while confronting the unsettling realities of their family’s secrets, including Donald’s unwillingness to unveil the truth about the child’s remains.
As Virginia meticulously guides Raymond through the reinterment process, they unknowingly awaken the spirits once more. In a fateful moment during the ritual, Becca accidentally drops Hannah’s remains, marking her hand with a sign of the paranormal disruptions at play. Despite the challenges, Raymond and Becca persist with their efforts to rebury the remains, although their actions seem to incite greater intensity in the haunting.
To gain further insight, Virginia calls upon her talented granddaughter, Zelda, to conduct a séance within the confines of the Wadsworth house. During this exploration of spiritual realms, it becomes evident that Ambrose’s restless spirit longs for the return of his daughter Hannah’s cherished necklace. This revelation compels Raymond to reconsider his long-term medication, which unbeknownst to him, had been a means to repress his burgeoning psychic abilities.
Unbeknownst to Raymond, Donald had directed Dr. Carpenter to remove his son’s medication, inadvertently triggering an explosion of paranormal events in their lives. In pursuit of the necklace, Raymond and Becca find themselves facing even more resistance from Donald, whose desperation grows as he tries to shield his son from the awakening truths. Just as they finish the burial, the police show up, answering Donald’s frantic call for help.
As chaos unfolds outside, the group finds refuge in the Wadsworth home, witnessing the long-sought resolution of Ambrose and Hannah’s lingering presence. In the aftermath of these events, Donald is compelled to confront the consequences of his actions, leading him to relinquish the family home. Amid the upheaval, Eve discovers comfort in her relationship with Hector, while Raymond and Becca embark on an exciting new journey—launching Edge City Supernatural Detectives, a promising venture aimed at uncovering the truth for those lost in the shadows of uncertainty.
