Stanley Jobson, an accomplished hacker played by Hugh Jackman, made headlines when he managed to compromise the FBI’s Carnivore program, effectively disrupting its rollout for years. As a result of his actions, he was apprehended by Agent Roberts and served a two-year sentence in Leavenworth for his cyber crimes. Now on parole, Stanley faces strict restrictions, including a complete ban on using computers. His personal life is in turmoil; his ex-wife Melissa has custody of their daughter, Holly, and a restraining order keeps him from seeing her.

While practicing his golf swing in rural Texas, Stanley’s life takes a twist when he encounters a charismatic woman named Ginger Knowles, portrayed by Halle Berry. Ginger seeks his exceptional hacking talents for her enigmatic boss, Gabriel Shear, played by John Travolta. Enticed by an offer of $100,000, Stanley agrees to a meeting with Gabriel in a Los Angeles nightclub. What unfolds there is both harrowing and thrilling: under the threat of a gun—though it’s revealed to be unloaded—Gabriel pressures Stanley to hack into a government system within a minute. To everyone’s surprise, Stanley succeeds, impressing Gabriel.

As they delve deeper into the scheme, Gabriel persuades Stanley to create a computer worm designed to siphon $9.5 billion from a covert government slush fund, promising him $10 million for his genius. Gabriel reveals he is part of the covert organization known as Black Cell, established by J. Edgar Hoover in the 1950s for retaliatory operations against terrorists. Tension escalates when Senator Reisman discovers the FBI is closing in on Gabriel’s plan, leading to dangerous confrontations and ultimately, assassination attempts.

In a bold move, Gabriel executes a bank heist at WORLDBANC, using Stanley’s creation to steal the massive sum. He and his team take hostages during the escapade, but his plan becomes increasingly intricate as he manipulates the situation, culminating in an audacious escape via an S-64 Aircrane that lifts a bus of hostages to a skyscraper rooftop. However, as chaos ensues, Stanley uncovers that Gabriel is not who he appears to be, leading to a thrilling conclusion where he outwits his adversaries.

In the climactic scenes set in Monte Carlo, the plot thickens as Ginger and Gabriel—whose real identity is still a mystery—are seen transferring the stolen funds. The film concludes with an explosive twist, hinting at Gabriel’s true fate when a yacht is destroyed, leaving viewers questioning the outcome. An alternate ending on the DVD suggests yet another layer of deception, with Stanley potentially keeping the stolen money for himself while enjoying a new life with his daughter, further adding depth to an already intricate narrative.
