Plot Summary

In the seemingly idyllic town of Amityville, New York, where the tragic events of 1974’s DeFeo family massacre still lingered, a gruesome murder unfolded in the very same parish church where Father Ronald DeFeo Jr. took his own life. The priest’s mortal remains were left to rest in a cold, stone silence, as the confession booth he met his end in was removed and relegated to the dimly lit basement of the clergy house.

A dozen years passed before the dark history would be revisited by Dr. Marvin (actor name), a well-respected psychologist, and his wife Debbie. Their desire for a new home led them to purchase the very same clergy house where tragedy had unfolded. As they settled into their new life, Debbie’s initial excitement was tempered by an eerie sense of foreboding that permeated every corner of the property.

Her growing unease centered around the musty basement and its contents, including the now-forgotten confession booth. Despite her husband’s attempts to reassure her, Debbie’s nightmares only intensified, featuring the very same basement as a focal point. Marvin, ever the rational mind, urged Debbie to chronicle these nocturnal visitations, hoping to unravel their deeper psychological significance.

Their social circle soon included their friends Frank, Bill, and Abigail, whom they invited to join in their home renovation endeavors. It was during this period that Mrs. Moriarty, an enigmatic former church secretary, paid them a visit. Her cryptic words and mannerisms only served to heighten the sense of unease that already permeated the air.

As tensions mounted, the group began to experience inexplicable occurrences throughout the house. Doors creaked open on their own, objects moved with no visible force, and disembodied whispers seemed to emanate from the very walls themselves. While some members of the household were convinced they were dealing with a malevolent entity, Dr. Marvin remained skeptical, attributing these events to mass hysteria.

The group decided to take a break from the strange happenings by venturing out for dinner at a local tavern. Frank, however, was beset by a debilitating migraine and chose to remain behind, alone in the house. Meanwhile, Mrs. Moriarty crossed paths with Debbie once more, this time in the bathroom, where her words took on an eerie cadence that spoke of the priest who had once called the house his own.

The following day, Mrs. Moriarty’s visitation was cut short when she was violently attacked and sent tumbling down the basement staircase to her untimely demise. The ghastly event was inadvertently captured on a video camcorder left behind by Bill. As news of Mrs. Moriarty’s passing spread, the police arrived to investigate, revealing that they had identified the killer responsible for the priest’s murder – a local teenager who had met his own fate in a tragic, untimely end.

In the aftermath of these events, Debbie found herself plagued by visions of a man hanging lifelessly from a tree outside their home. The darkness that seemed to permeate every corner of the property continued to unfold, as if the very fabric of reality was beginning to unravel.

As the unsettling events unfold, Abigail’s unease becomes palpable and she hastily departs the scene. Marvin, driven by a growing sense of unease, embarks on a quest to unravel the cryptic secrets hidden within Debbie’s dream journals. However, Bill soon discovers that these writings are actually Latin incantations used for exorcism purposes. Meanwhile, Debbie is wracked with a haunting nightmare in which she bears witness to the gruesome truth surrounding the priest’s murder: he was brutally shot by his own illegitimate son, born out of a clandestine tryst between the priest and a parishioner who sought retribution for being abandoned. Shaken to her core, Debbie sets out to find Marvin, only to stumble upon his lifeless body in the dimly lit confession booth hidden deep within the basement’s labyrinthine corridors. It is there that she confronts Frank, now possessed by the malevolent spirit of the priest’s illegitimate son.

As police investigators scrutinize the evidence surrounding Mrs. Moriarty’s murder, they are able to identify Frank as the perpetrator through a grainy video tape recording that captures his distinctive footwear. Meanwhile, Frank gives chase to Debbie throughout the house, his relentless pursuit culminating in a gruesome attempt to impale her with a processional cross. However, Debbie manages to fend him off by firing a nail gun at point-blank range. Abigail returns to find Frank’s lifeless body, only for him to miraculously reanimate and begin throttling her mercilessly. In a desperate bid to save herself, Debbie seizes the processional cross and drives it through Frank’s chest, ultimately impaling him to death.

As the dust settles, Debbie and Abigail are escorted out of the house by law enforcement officials. It is then that a detective presents Debbie with a photograph of an infant boy – the priest’s illegitimate son – recovered at the crime scene. He asks if the child belongs to her, prompting Debbie to respond that it actually belongs to the very house itself.
