The Aspern Papers 2019

In the captivating setting of late 19th century Venice, the story of The Aspern Papers weaves a tale of obsession, the decline of grandeur, and Byronic adventures, all inspired by Henry James’ novella of the same name. At the heart of this narrative is Morton Vint, an ambitious editor whose determination to uncover the hidden letters of the Romantic poet Jeffrey Aspern drives him from America to the mesmerizing canals of the City of Water.

Morton’s intense admiration for the legendary Aspern, a figure whose life was filled with romance and intrigue, fuels his relentless quest. His journey brings him to a grand, yet faded, Venetian palazzo where Juliana Bordereau, played by Vanessa Redgrave, resides along with her elusive niece, Miss Tina, portrayed by Joely Richardson.

Assuming the role of a potential lodger, Morton charms Miss Tina with his allure and captivating stories. Yet, he initially masks his true objective. Eventually, his passions spill over, leading him to confess to Miss Tina his desire to possess the poet’s letters. Caught between her loyalty to her aunt Juliana and her budding feelings for the magnetic Morton, Tina reluctantly agrees to assist him in his fervent pursuit.
