Fifteen years have passed since Harper Stewart’s debut novel sent shockwaves across the literary landscape. Yet, he now finds himself grappling with creative blockage and financial troubles after losing his job at NYU and facing mounting costs due to his wife Robyn’s fertility treatments as they eagerly await the arrival of their child. In a moment of desperation, Harper’s agent proposes that he write a biography about his former best friend, the elusive Lance Sullivan, a New York Giants legend who is on the verge of retirement. Although the two remain in contact, Lance has maintained a distance, clearly showing reluctance to restore their former camaraderie.

In an effort to navigate Lance’s hesitance, Harper decides to undertake the biography in secret. Meanwhile, Mia Sullivan, Lance’s wife, invites friends over for a Christmas gathering, uniting a vibrant mix of personalities: Julian “Murch” Murchison and his wife Candace Sparks, her best friend Jordan Armstrong and her boyfriend Brian McDonald, along with Quentin “Q” Spivey and Shelby Taylor, a recognizable face from the reality TV show The Real Housewives. Each character brings their unique flair, setting the stage for a dynamic evening.

As long-standing friendships rekindle, forgotten tensions begin to rise to the surface. Harper navigates his complicated relationship with Lance while gathering information for his biography. Shelby, on the other hand, pursues a spark with Murch, whose marriage with Candace has faced numerous hurdles. Robyn struggles to connect with Jordan, who is keenly aware of the past emotional entanglements haunting Harper and his group of friends.

As the evening unfolds, everyone gathers for a lively pajama party, where the men engage in a spirited lip-syncing of “Can You Stand the Rain.” This lively celebration has a profound effect, bringing Harper and Lance closer together. However, the mood shifts dramatically when Mia reveals an earth-shattering truth: she has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and appeals to Harper for help in preparing Lance for the devastating reality of her mortality.

The following morning, Q and Shelby inadvertently swap phones, leading to unforeseen discoveries. A hidden part of Candace’s past comes to light when Shelby uncovers an incriminating video, igniting conflicts within the group. Candace confronts Shelby, resulting in a physical clash that drives Candace to leave the party with her children.

After the confrontation, reconciliation comes when Candace returns to Julian, while Brian must depart for his family’s Christmas. As Jordan defiantly embraces her independence, it becomes clear that buried beneath the surface is a tangled web of relationships laden with their own struggles and victories. When the ladies prepare for a day of pampering, the atmosphere takes a sudden shift when Mia collapses, prompting Harper to share her true condition with their friends. In a remarkable show of unity, everyone unites to offer support during this difficult time.

As Harper wraps gifts for the children, Lance steps in for a nostalgic chat, recalling their college days. However, this seemingly heartwarming moment sours when Lance finds Harper’s iPad and journal within Mia’s purse, revealing a mock-up of an unauthorized biography about him. Furious, Lance confronts Harper, demanding further distance from him and his family, despite Mia’s attempts to ease the tension.

The next day, while volunteering at a local shelter, Lance is confronted with Harper’s financial hardships, which Mia, sensing her husband’s turmoil, does not address. This moment leads Harper to breakdown, unearthing hidden truths about his circumstances. Demonstrating true friendship, Q offers to help with Harper’s debts.

Lance, still fuming over the biography, is faced with a harsh reality when Mia reveals her true condition by removing her wig, exposing the severity of her illness. Christmas Day arrives, and Jordan attempts to apologize to Brian, unaware that he’s already arrived home. Lance, set to play in a pivotal game, chooses to prioritize Mia over football, but with her urging, he takes the field. Inspired by her encouragement, he secures a remarkable win and breaks the rushing yards record.

However, tragedy strikes as Mia succumbs to her cancer shortly after the Christmas celebrations, leaving behind a legacy defined by love and dedication. At her memorial service, Harper delivers a moving eulogy that honors Mia’s life and spirit. Lance, wrestling with his faith, finds comfort in Harper’s words, while Harper, lacking the same beliefs, is uplifted by Lance’s strength.

In the wake of the service, chaos ensues when Robyn goes into labor. Lance, Harper, and Candace embark on a hurried trip to the hospital, only to become ensnared in traffic. In a surprising turn of events, Lance delivers Harper’s baby in their SUV, celebrating the arrival of a healthy baby girl named Mia in honor of her mother.

This bittersweet experience serves as a poignant reminder of love and resilience. As seasons shift, Harper and Lance’s bond grows into an unbreakable partnership, shaped by shared experiences and mutual respect. Harper devotes himself to chronicling Lance’s extraordinary life story in a biography titled God, Family, and Football. Their reunion in New York City brings warmth and celebration, but a playful phone call from Q hints at an upcoming wedding, warning Harper to keep a respectful distance from Q’s bride-to-be, layered with humor and a touch of jealousy.
