Plot Summary

In the stillness of the night, Sophie, an adventurous eight-year-old orphan, finds herself unable to sleep as she gazes out at the barren landscape from her window. Suddenly, she spots a colossal figure - the Big Friendly Giant (BFG). As if aware of her presence, the BFG’s eyes meet Sophie’s, causing her to scramble under her covers in fear. Yet, before she can fully hide, his long, slender arms reach out and gently lift her from her window, transporting her to a vast, underground space amidst a bleak terrain.

At first, Sophie fears she may be the giant’s next meal, pleading for her life. But the BFG, with his warm laughter and gentle demeanor, quickly reassures her that he has no such intentions. He reveals his true nature as a kind-hearted giant who captures dreams in his suitcase, sending the sweet ones to children around the world while eliminating the nightmares. His unique gift allows him to usurp the fearsome giants who share his world—nine other towering figures who gleefully indulge in human flesh as their nightly feast.

The BFG’s suitcase, filled with dreams, serves as a vital part of his existence. As he narrates his tale, Sophie discovers that his immense size is matched only by his modesty and kindness. His quirkily fascinating world includes delights such as the snozzcumber, a foul-smelling vegetable that serves as his only food source. However, their merrymaking is disrupted when Bloodbottler, one of the menacing giants, arrives without invitation. Thinking quickly, Sophie hides among the stinking folds of the snozzcumber while the BFG cleverly tricks Bloodbottler into devouring it. In a comical twist, Sophie finds herself unintentionally enveloped in the giant’s mouth, only to be spat out unscathed moments later.

The two share a unique drink called frobscottle, notable for its bubbles that sink instead of rise. Each sip brings Sophie closer to understanding the remarkable realm inhabited by the BFG, where dreams are cherished like treasured gems. As the BFG takes Sophie on an adventure through Dream Country, they encounter a motley crew of giants led by the formidable Fleshlumpeater. As they navigate this land, Sophie witnesses the BFG’s dream-catching abilities, where he gathers both pleasant dreams and nightmares. Enraged by his tormentors, the BFG exacts poetic justice on Fleshlumpeater by unleashing a nightmare featuring a heroic figure named Jack, resulting in pandemonium among the giants as they thrash about in their sleep.

Sophie, brimming with courage, convinces the BFG to approach Her Majesty the Queen of England for assistance, leading him to the majestic Buckingham Palace. With a whimsical flourish, he deposits Sophie into the Queen’s chamber, where he shares a nightmare that echoes real-life dangers. Upon waking, the Queen becomes a believer in the BFG’s mission, enlisting a task force to capture the other giants as they sleep.

Leading a fleet of helicopters, the BFG guides them to the giants’ lair. Eight are successfully captured, but Fleshlumpeater awakens, prompting a quick decision from Sophie and the BFG to outsmart him. They collect the BFG’s dreams as trophies, all while ensuring the helicopters transport the nine giants to England for incarceration in a massive pit.

As word of the giants’ capture spreads, countries across the globe express their gratitude, showering the BFG and Sophie with gifts and a lavish residence in Windsor Great Park. This location soon becomes a tourist hotspot, though one fateful night, three drunken revelers breach the secure area, offering a surprising turn of events.

Honored for his contributions, the BFG earns the title of Royal Dream-Blower, continuing to sprinkle gentle dreams upon children everywhere. He also embraces his newfound linguistic prowess, penning a novel under an alias that tells his extraordinary tale, forever capturing the imagination of those who read it.
