The story unfolds in Ghent, located in the Flemish Region of Belgium, chronicling the seven-year journey of Didier (Johan Heldenbergh) and Elise (Veerle Baetens), two souls brought together by their mutual love for bluegrass music. Their meeting occurs in Elise’s tattoo parlour, where Didier extends an invitation to her for a performance by his band. Sparks fly as they quickly fall in love, especially after Didier discovers Elise’s remarkable singing voice, which leads her to join the band.

Months later, a surprise pregnancy alters their lives in ways they never anticipated. While it is initially a shocking revelation, the couple embraces this new chapter with joy, welcoming their daughter Maybelle into the world. For several years, they relish a blissful life full of music and success.

However, tragedy strikes after Maybelle’s sixth birthday when she is diagnosed with cancer, leading to a rapid decline in her health. The heartbreak escalates as she loses her battle after just one year. The loss of Maybelle profoundly fractures the bond between Didier and Elise, sending their lives spiraling into turmoil. Didier becomes increasingly entrenched in scientific rationalism, particularly motivated by his frustration with the opposition to embryonic stem cell research presented by George W. Bush under the influence of creationists. Meanwhile, Elise seeks refuge in spiritual beliefs and concepts of reincarnation. As the distance between them widens, desperation sets in, culminating in Elise’s attempt to take her own life.

She is rushed to the hospital, yet the news is devastating when she is declared braindead. The heartbreaking decision falls on Didier, leading him to consent to withdraw life support. In a poignant farewell, the band gathers around Elise’s deathbed to play a song, a bittersweet ending to their intertwined lives of love, loss, and music.
