What is Rabbi Avram Belinski's background before arriving in Philadelphia?
As Rabbi Avram Belinski, portrayed by Harrison Ford, steps off the train in Philadelphia, his innocence and naivety are strikingly evident. Recently graduated from a Polish yeshiva, where he was at the bottom of his class, Avram is eager yet inexperienced in his new role as a rabbi for a congregation in San Francisco. Clutching a treasured Torah scroll, he falls victim to the charming con artists Matt and Darryl Diggs, along with their accomplice Mr. Jones. This sly trio convinces Avram to invest in a wagon and supplies for their journey westward, only to ruthlessly rob him, leaving him battered and alone on a desolate road in Pennsylvania.
Refusing to let this ordeal deter him, Avram embarks on his journey once again, soon encountering an Amish colony. Mistakenly believing he has found fellow Hasidic Jews due to their plain attire and Christian symbols, he experiences a sudden shock when he realizes they are, in fact, Christians, causing him to faint. Fortunately, the compassionate Amish take him in, nurse his injuries, and gather enough money to help him purchase a train ticket for his continued travels west.
Arriving in Ohio, Avram secures work on the railroad, diligently saving until he can finally afford a horse and essential supplies. His path crosses with Tommy Lillard, a bank robber with a surprisingly kind heart, who is drawn to Avram’s good-natured honesty, even when it leads to unexpected troubles. After Tommy executes a daring heist on a Friday, Avram refuses to accompany him into the sunset, despite the looming presence of a pursuing posse. Their adventures take a turn as they experience Native American hospitality and unwittingly disrupt the solemn silence at a Trappist monastery.
As they draw closer to San Francisco, fate has Avram encounter the Diggs brothers and Mr. Jones once more. An intense confrontation unfolds, leaving Avram severely injured until Tommy intervenes just in time, rescuing him from further danger. The con artists must flee, with Tommy taking back Avram’s stolen belongings along with some additional treasures. However, their joy is short-lived as Avram feels shattered when Tommy announces they must part ways.
Nonetheless, the Diggs brothers and Mr. Jones are not finished with Avram yet. They ambush the pair on a sun-drenched beach where they have stopped for a moment of respite. In a tense showdown, Tommy takes down Mr. Jones with a precise shot, grazes Matt—who quickly escapes—and leaves Darryl to face Avram in a final, deadly confrontation. As Avram grapples with the complexities of his new role as a spiritual leader in San Francisco, an unsettling sense of self-doubt begins to darken his spirit. The burdens of his past actions, including a life taken on the beach, weigh heavily on him and threaten to shake his confidence as a rabbi.
His struggle intensifies as he is torn between his duty to protect the sacred Torah and his deep instinct to save Tommy, who has become his closest companion. It is Tommy’s sage advice that ultimately bolsters Avram’s resolve, reminding him that his essence remains unblemished despite his challenging choices.
Just as Avram seems to find his footing, he faces a new challenge from Matt, the last surviving member of the treacherous trio. Boldly, Matt issues a challenge for a duel, aiming to test Avram’s courage and determination. Undaunted, Avram draws from his inner strength and reveals profound wisdom, disarming his foe with an exhibition of bravery and conviction that inspires the entire community. With Tommy steadfastly at his side, Avram triumphantly expels Matt from San Francisco, solidifying his authority and credibility as a leader of faith.
Following this pivotal confrontation, Avram’s life is forever transformed by a long-dormant desire. He finds himself drawn to Rosalie Bender, the stunning younger daughter whose beauty and charm had enchanted him since their first encounter. In a touching ceremony, Avram weds Rosalie, with Tommy serving as his trusted best man—an enduring symbol of friendship and unwavering devotion.
