In a dramatic yet thrilling tale set in a mythical nation positioned within a snowy, mountainous expanse of Europe, the plot unfolds as a mixed group of travelers finds themselves stranded due to an avalanche that has blocked the railway tracks. In order to wait out the adverse weather, the passengers seek refuge in a quaint village hotel, thereby unwittingly ushering in a series of enigmatic events. Within this eclectic assembly, we meet the two British gents, Caldicott and Charters, whose overwhelming concern about missing an imminent cricket Test match only heightens the suspense as they are forced to share the last available room—the maid’s quarters.
Among the guests is Iris, a young woman of considerable independence, returning home to tie the knot after a holiday spent with friends. She is joined by the charming Miss Froy, a kindly elderly lady who has worked abroad as a governess and music instructor, and Gilbert, a passionate young musicologist who has immersed himself in the folk songs of the region. Additionally, there is a secretive couple, Mr. Todhunter and Mrs. Todhunter, who are conducting an affair under the cloak of discretion. The merriment is disrupted, however, by loud folk dancers occupying the room above Gilbert, making it impossible for Miss Froy to hear the enticing melody serenading from the street below.
As tensions rise, Iris takes it upon herself to persuade the hotel manager to evict Gilbert from his room. This sparks an confrontation when he storms into her quarters, refusing to vacate. Meanwhile, Miss Froy becomes captivated by the street musician, tossing a coin from her window to express her appreciation. In a shocking twist, the music halts abruptly, revealing a murderous hand that appears to have silenced the talented singer, yet no one else seems to acknowledge this ominous act.
Upon the dawn of a new day, the travelers prepare to depart the hotel and board the train, where Miss Froy seeks Iris’s assistance in locating her luggage. As the two ladies gather around a heap of bags, an ominous flowerpot hurtles down from an upper floor, meant for Miss Froy but inadvertently striking Iris, who groggily assures everyone she is fine before venturing onto the train, only to lose consciousness shortly thereafter. When she regains her composure, Iris finds herself in a train compartment facing Miss Froy, albeit surrounded by other travelers who apparently cannot comprehend English.
The unlikely duo exchanges pleasantries, making their way to the dining car for tea, where the ever-poised Miss Froy carries her own supply of Harriman’s Herbal Tea. During their meal, a miscommunication leads to Miss Froy inadvertently irritating the cricket-obsessed gentlemen, who are only interested in securing their precious sugar cubes for an impromptu game. Engaged in spirited conversation, Miss Froy reveals her storied profession while they secure lunchtime seats together. Upon returning to the compartment after their meal, Iris succumbs to a deep nap next to Miss Froy.
However, upon awakening, Iris is horrified to discover that Miss Froy has inexplicably vanished. The other passengers, including the Baroness Mary Clare and a mysterious Italian gentleman, insist that “the English lady” was merely a figment of her imagination. Even those in the same boat as her—the Todhunters and cricket enthusiasts—eschew recognition of Miss Froy for reasons tied to their own secretive motives. An untrustworthy doctor, Dr. Egon Hartz, posits that Iris is merely suffering from hallucinatory delusions due to her earlier bump to the head, yet Iris is convinced that a more sinister plot is afoot and embarks on a personal mission to find Miss Froy.
During her search, Iris reunites with Gilbert, whose earlier prickly demeanor has transformed into a desire to assist her, believing sincerely in her distress. With the train remaining stagnant, the duo is determined to uncover the whereabouts of Miss Froy. They soon encounter a heavily bandaged patient, an apparent victim of severe illness, but neither can spot any sign of Miss Froy.
At a subsequent stop, Iris and Gilbert interrogate fellow travelers, gathering scant clues until Mrs. Todhunter hints that she has seen Miss Froy, hoping that bringing her name to light will incite a scandal that benefits her own situation. However, the situation grows increasingly tense when they find a woman resembling Miss Froy, only for the identity of this newcomer—Madame Kummer—to be exposed as an imposter. As Gilbert seems poised to unravel the truth, the plot thickens as the enigmatic character of the Great Doppo, a magician with a talent for making individuals vanish, enters the scene.
The stakes escalate as Iris discovers Miss Froy’s name etched in dust amidst a train tunnel, reigniting her determination. After a desperate pull of the emergency cord and a confrontation with dubious station authorities, Iris, along with Gilbert, takes significant risks, culminating in a season of intense courage and unwavering friendship.
The narrative unfolds with thrilling action sequences, as they evade a dangerous plot led by Dr. Hartz and his accomplices. With dramatic finales and unexpected twists, the travelers ultimately coalesce to mount a rescue. In the midst of tension, Gilbert discovers a striking melody, one he realizes is pivotal to their quest.
As the story draws to a close, the barriers between oppression and freedom dissolve, revealing the inner strength and resourcefulness of Iris, Gilbert, and Miss Froy who finally finds a way to assist her compatriots, intertwining their fate with a harmonious victory that trumps nefarious intentions. Their dramatic conclusion is marked by a return to London, where love, loyalty, and a unique melody seal a beautiful reunion.
