In 1940s Georgia, troubled teenager David flees his impoverished hometown on a train, haunted by memories of a lonely childhood marred by bullying from his father and rejection from peers. As he reflects on the struggles of his family - including his mother's mental collapse - a beacon of hope emerges in the form of his quirky aunt Mae, who offers David a sense of belonging.
