In what year is The Nun II set?
In 1956, at a church in Tarascon, France, Father Noiret and Jacques are engaged in their routine tasks when a disturbance leads to a shocking turn of events. Without warning, Noiret is suddenly lifted into the air, engulfed in flames, and tragically burned to death, all while Jacques clings to the priest’s rosary in horror.
Moving forward in time, following the haunting events at Saint Cartha’s monastery, Sister Irene now dedicates her life in a convent located in Italy. Meanwhile, Maurice finds a new purpose, working at a boarding school in France, where he forms a bond with a spirited young Irish girl named Sophie, as well as her mother Kate, and a compassionate teacher. One fateful day, Irene experiences a troubling vision of Maurice reaching out for her assistance, which compels her to confront a surge of recent mysterious deaths that have been sweeping across Europe. On her journey to Tarascon, she is unexpectedly joined by a young novice, Sister Debra, who insists on accompanying her despite lacking permission.
During their train ride, Debra expresses her struggle to believe in miracles, such as the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, prompting Irene to share the vital significance of faith. Upon arriving in Tarascon, Irene has a chilling vision where she follows Jacques into a dark alley, only to be seized and choked by Valak, the sinister demon masquerading as a nun. The next day, Debra reveals to Irene that she encountered Jacques, who handed her Father Noiret’s rosary.
At the boarding school, Sophie faces bullying from her peers, which escalates to her being locked in the forbidden abandoned chapel. Her tormentors tell tales of a goat depicted in the window mosaic, warning that if she dares to look away, the devil will come to haunt her. As the sun beams through the mosaic, the goat’s eye glows a foreboding shade of red.
Irene and Debra visit the Palais des Papes, where a librarian unravels the dark history surrounding the demon they are pursuing, revealing it to be an angel expelled from heaven. The emblem on the rosary they are examining is linked to the family crest of St. Lucy, a martyr who was set ablaze by a pagan yet survived miraculously. Her family had disbursed her eyes, which were thought to be hidden in an old monastery, now identified as the boarding school itself.
Determined, Irene and Debra return to the school, finding Maurice in distress alongside Sophie and Kate. Irene’s heart sinks as she discloses that the demon resides within Maurice. Overwhelmed, he succumbs to the demon’s influence, attacking both Irene and Debra, only to be rendered unconscious shortly after. Inside the chapel, Sophie reveals a cruel game her classmates forced her to play, and with the use of a flashlight, Debra illuminates the goat’s eyes in the mosaic, which reveals the location of St. Lucy’s eyes buried deep below.
As chaos unfolds, Debra and Kate get separated from Irene and Sophie in an effort to shield the schoolgirls from the demonic goat. Under the demon’s control, Maurice breaks free and viciously charges at Irene while Sophie seizes the relic, fleeing for her life. In a desperate chase, Maurice causes a disastrous collapse of the bell tower. Irene discovers Sophie trapped inside, reuniting with Debra as the trio navigates the perilous threats.
In a moment of revelation, Debra confesses to having witnessed a true miracle, finally embracing her faith. Armed with the relic, Irene stands against Maurice, who overpowers her, lifting her in the air and igniting flames around her. However, she is shielded from harm as she realizes her lineage ties her to St. Lucy, granting her a connection to the relic’s power.
Together, Irene and Debra recite the sacred Words of Institution used in the Christian Eucharistic celebration, leading barrels of wine at the former monastery to transform into the blood of Christ. As this divine essence envelops Valak, the demon is ultimately vanquished, condemned back to the depths of hell.
