In September 1991, the fishing trawler, The Andrea Gail, returns to its home port in Gloucester, Massachusetts, after a disappointing catch. Driven by financial desperation, Billy Tyne, the captain, persuades his crew to embark on one last fishing expedition before the season ends. They venture beyond their regular fishing spots, leaving a brewing thunderstorm in their wake. At first, their luck doesn’t improve, but upon reaching the Flemish Cap, they finally begin to catch fish. Unfortunately, disaster strikes when the ice machine fails, and they realize they must return to shore quickly to preserve their haul.

Faced with the choice of navigating through a rapidly intensifying storm or waiting for it to pass, the crew opts for the perilous route. Unbeknownst to them, a fierce convergence of two weather fronts and an impending hurricane lies ahead, threats they severely underestimate. Despite multiple warnings from other vessels, their situation worsens when The Andrea Gail loses its antenna, prompting a distress signal. An Air National Guard helicopter answers the call for help, but their attempts to refuel midair fail, forcing them to abandon their aircraft just before it crashes. Fortunately, a Coast Guard vessel, The Tamaroa, manages to rescue nearly all except for two crew members.

The Andrea Gail is battered by massive 40-foot waves crashing against its deck, while mechanical failures, like a broken stabilizer, exacerbate the struggle. In a desperate bid to avoid even greater peril, the crew decides to turn back. Unfortunately, their fate takes a turn for the worse when they encounter a colossal rogue wave.

“At that moment, they knew they had lost everything.”

In a tragic outcome, the fishing vessel capsizes and sinks. Among the crew, only Bobby Shatford manages to escape the sinking ship, but his chances of survival are slim as he is left isolated in the tumultuous sea. Ultimately, he is seen alone among the relentless waves, invoking a sense of hopelessness. Meanwhile, onshore, a somber memorial service unfolds as friends and family anxiously await the return of those lost at sea, never to see their loved ones again.
