The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure 2022

In the late 14th century, during the emergence of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty, we are introduced to the fierce female pirate captain, Hae-Rang, portrayed by Han Hyo-Joo. Hae-Rang stumbles upon a treasure map after raiding a group of Japanese pirates sailing in Korean waters; this map is rumored to reveal the location of a vast bounty of imperial gold—a treasure misappropriated from the royal palace and subsequently lost at sea. Alongside her determined crew, she also finds herself entangled with a group of bandits, led by Wu Mu-Chi, played by Kang Ha-Neul, whom she rescued from the clutches of the unforgiving sea.

As the plot thickens, tensions rise aboard the ship. Wu Mu-Chi harbors ambitions of taking command but soon realizes that Hae-Rang is undeniably the captain. In a twist of fate, he covertly swipes the treasure map and retreats to a nearby island, propelling Hae-Rang into action as she relentlessly searches for him to forge a reluctant alliance. The atmosphere is thick with unease as both sides recognize that cooperation is their only chance at success.

Among Hae-Rang’s loyal crew, we also meet Akwi, played by Ji-hwan Park, who is known for his unyielding strength. Wu Mu-Chi’s band of ruffians includes Kang-Seob, the steadfast right-hand man, and Mak-Yi, portrayed by Kwang-soo Lee, who plots to sell the coveted map to the highest bidder. Hae-Rang and Wu Mu-Chi unite forces to track down Mak-Yi, leading to a series of thrilling escapades filled with deception and treachery.

Complicating their quest is Bu Heung-Su, characterized by Kwon Sang-woo, a former officer in the Emperor’s army, who has his sights set on the treasure as well. He aims to deliver it to King Yi Bang Won, who is yearning for the riches to consolidate his claim to the Joseon throne—turning the rivalry over the treasure into a contest with historical implications. Both factions—Hae-Rang and Wu Mu-Chi on one side, and Bu Heung-Su on the other—are aware that the treasure lies hidden within perilous waters and a treacherous sea cave.

The narrative subsequently delves into the intricate backdrop of the era, illustrating the division within the royal court of the Goryeo dynasty amid the rise of the Ming dynasty. We discover that two factions emerged, one loyal to General Yi Seong-Gye and the other to his rival, General Choe, during a tumultuous period in 1388. The tension culminates in a brutal campaign that ultimately leads Yi Seong-Gye to orchestrate a coup that shifts the power dynamics in Korea forever. This historical setup propels the film into a series of events that deeply intertwine with the treasure hunt.

As Hae-Rang and Wu Mu-Chi navigate the treacherous waters, they discover part of the treasure, only to find silver pieces instead of the expected gold. Their thrilling escapade culminates in a confrontation with Bu Heung-Su, stacking their ambitions against the backdrop of a bitter past—it is a clash rooted in loyalty, betrayal, and a longing for power.

In one striking confrontation, Bu Heung-Su hurls the ultimatum, “Will you steal what is mine?” This not only alludes to the treasure but also serves as a jab at Wu Mu-Chi’s past actions. The enmity between them is palpable, steeped in a history that robbed Bu Heung-Su of his chance to sit upon the throne of Tamna.

Amidst a whirlwind of betrayals and the chaotic pursuit of the treasure, Wu Mu-Chi barely escapes the clutches of Bu Heung-Su, even as Mak-Yi makes plans to locate the treasure’s hidden cave, guarded by fantastical creatures. The action crescendos with epic fights, clever maneuvers, and a test of wills as they unravel the mysteries of the treasure’s location.

In the thrilling climax, the film takes viewers through heart-pounding moments as alliances are tested and loyalties are betrayed.
