What year is the dystopian future set in The Starving Games?
In the distant future of 2213, we find Kantmiss Evershot, who is honing her archery skills in a serene forest setting. To her surprise, her boyfriend Dale appears, leading to an accidental mishap where an arrow strikes the Wizard of Oz. After this chaos, they make their way back to District 12, where the residents are embroiled in disputes over dwindling food supplies. During the 75th annual Starving Games gathering, President Snowballs reveals, in a rather bizarre promotional video, his reasoning for dividing America into districts. He claims that this segregation prevents “stupid stuff,” such as Lady Gaga being president, from occurring again, which has resulted in the wealthy adopting increasingly eccentric fashion choices.
When the time comes for the contestant drawing in District 12, mayhem ensues as inappropriate and humorous name puns are drawn first. In a cunning twist, Petunia, Kantmiss’s sister, tricks her into volunteering for the games when her name is announced. Despite Dale’s eagerness to volunteer as well, Peter Malarky, known for his foolishness, manages to beat him to the punch.
As the gruesome games commence, Kantmiss observes her fellow contestants engage in fierce battles over supplies, leading to a rapid decline in numbers due to either obtaining what they desire or falling victim in violent encounters. In a moment of desperation, she seizes a backpack and attempts to escape, only to face an unexpected onslaught from Angry Birds sent by the producers. After a harrowing encounter, she crushes the Annoying Orange in an act of defiance. Peter finds himself teaming up with Marco’s gang, who are intent on eliminating Kantmiss. However, when Kantmiss inadvertently disturbs a beehive, chaos ensues, resulting in a hallucinatory episode where she perceives herself as a Na’vi until her senses are restored by fellow contestant Rudy. Together, they form an alliance, determined to eliminate their competition.
As the competition intensifies, Kantmiss employs cunning tactics to exploit her opponents’ weaknesses. Tragically, Rudy sacrifices himself to save Kantmiss, further deepening her resolve. Meanwhile, President Snowballs, eager to stir controversy, desires a romantic subplot but quickly realizes that Kantmiss is the last remaining female contestant. In a strategic twist, the producer announces that a couple can share victory, prompting Kantmiss to reconsider her alliances, ultimately choosing to team up with Marco instead of Peter. However, after discovering Peter gravely injured due to Marco’s ruthless antics, Kantmiss opts to flee with him to a hiding spot in a cave.
The dynamics change again when the producer offers medical supplies in exchange for Kantmiss and Peter’s budding romance. Just as they start to grow closer, they are interrupted by a comical invasion from Gandalf and the Dwarves, only to be swiftly removed. The situation ramps up when Kantmiss reluctantly agrees to become intimate with Peter for better supplies, a scene that becomes public spectacle, leaving Dale disillusioned as he storms into the arena to confront her.
The following day, tension mounts as Peter tries to reignite their romantic undertones, only to have Kantmiss almost crush his hands in a fierce rejection. In a twist of fate, they find themselves entangled with Marco, leading to a nail-biting standoff where Kantmiss ingeniously kills Marco by shooting a loaf of bread into his eye. As the games twist narratives, the announcement that there can be only one winner reverberates through the arena. Peter attempts to persuade Kantmiss to take their lives together using poisonous berries, hoping to deny their captors the satisfaction of a death match. Nevertheless, Kantmiss chooses to kill Peter, declaring that her actions are “nothing personal.”
In an unexpected turn of events, Nick Fury from the Avengers arrives, hoping to recruit Kantmiss as a replacement for Hawkeye. However, the whims of the universe conspire against them as an explosion abruptly claims the lives of the Avengers, leaving Kantmiss to navigate the chaos of the Starving Games alone and ultimately redefining her fate.
