The story unfolds with a poignant voiceover from Natasha Kingsley, portrayed by Yara Shahidi, reflecting on the Big Bang and its implications on the universe and human existence. Natasha muses that while understanding the human heart generally takes a lifetime, for her, it would only require a single day.
Residing in the bustling hub of New York City, Natasha’s family includes her loving parents, Samuel and Patricia, played by Gbenga Akinnagbe and Miriam A. Hyman respectively, along with her brother Peter. With a keen passion for science, Natasha recounts her parents’ love story, igniting a spirit of hope in her as they navigate the impending deportation back to Jamaica scheduled for the next day. Determined to alter this fate, she reaches out to the immigration office for assistance, where she meets attorney Lester Barnes before receiving a recommendation to Jeremy Martinez, a lawyer willing to take her case pro bono.
Meanwhile, Daniel Bae, portrayed by Charles Melton, is caught up in preparing for his medical school interview at Dartmouth, encouraged by his Korean parents, Dae Hyun and Min Soo (Keong Sim and Cathy Shim). On the subway, Daniel and his friend Omar overhear an intriguing story from the conductor that alludes to being present for a specific purpose in life, inspiring Daniel to chase after Natasha when he sees her in imminent danger from an erratic driver.
Their meeting blossoms into a heartfelt connection as they discuss belief and fate over coffee, presenting a contrast between Daniel’s romantic ideals and Natasha’s skeptical nature. As they explore the city, an unexpected twist occurs when Jeremy is unexpectedly sidelined due to a car accident, leaving Natasha and Daniel with more time to bond. They share intimate moments exploring their aspirations and facing the realities of their lives, culminating in a memorable first kiss amidst aspirations of a future together.
However, the looming consequences of Natasha’s family situation weigh heavily on her. After a heartbreaking meeting with Jeremy, where it’s revealed that her family’s appeal for staying in the U.S. has been denied, she confronts the reality that this time together is fleeting. Despite this, she reconnects with Daniel, sharing details of their lives and culminating in bittersweet moments, especially in the airport, where a final eye contact test becomes a backdrop for their emotions.
Fast forward five years, and the narrative brings Natasha back to NYC, now on a student visa. In an unexpected reunion at a coffee shop with Jeremy, a serendipitous turn leads her to discover Daniel right beside her, reciting poetry. Their eyes meet, and in a whirlwind of emotions, they embrace the possibility of what may lie ahead with a kiss, promising that though life has taken them on divergent paths, their hearts are irreversibly linked.
