The oppressive presence of Assad’s forces only adds to their despair, as they face harassment at every checkpoint. In a bold move to reclaim their dreams, the sisters decide to embark on a perilous migration journey to Germany, despite their father’s reservations for their safety.

After a close brush with disaster when the venue for Yusra’s swimming competition is bombed, she successfully persuades Ezzat to let them travel with their cousin Nizar to Europe. They initially plan a safer land route, but after arriving in Istanbul, they find themselves drawn to a smuggler’s offer of a sea passage to Lesbos for $2000 each — a choice that ignites a mix of hope and trepidation.

As they board a precarious, overcrowded rubber dinghy, fear grips them. The boat begins to take on water, propelling Yusra and Sarah into action. “We have to save everyone,” Yusra recalls, signaling their desperate undertaking as they leap into the tumultuous waters, swimming alongside the frail dinghy to prevent it from sinking. The morning sun greets them as they set foot on Greek soil, marking the beginning of a long and grueling odyssey.

Having reached Germany, the sisters face the daunting process of asylum applications, living in cramped conditions. Their encounter with Sven, a local coach, becomes a turning point. He sees the sisters’ potential, offering Yusra a chance to train and pursue the dream that seemed lost.

As Yusra hones her skills, she learns of a groundbreaking initiative by the International Olympic Committee to create a Refugee Team for the upcoming Rio Olympics. Encouraged by her sister’s unwavering support, Yusra dedicates herself to training, aware that her opportunity is just within reach. The transformation leads to a moment of triumph when she finally receives her Olympic kit, igniting jealousy in Sarah, who struggles with her own path and returns to Lesbos to aid others.

As the narrative culminates at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Yusra becomes a symbol of hope for many, yet she faces the harsh truth of discrimination, battling feelings of inadequacy among elite athletes. Still, with Sarah cheering her on from the stands, Yusra makes the event memorable by triumphantly finishing her heat in the 100m butterfly with an impressive time.
