In the harsh terrain of Utah, defense attorney Nancy Breyers finds herself drawn to her mysterious client, Michael Bosworth, a man with a calculating and sociopathic personality. During an intermission in a courtroom hearing, Nancy takes the drastic step of secretly arming Bosworth. This leads to a violent escape where he ruthlessly eliminates a guard, leaving Nancy to fabricate a story about being taken hostage by the convict.
Simultaneously, decorated Vietnam War veteran Tim Cornell returns to his roots with his ex-wife Nora and their children, May, 15, and Zack, 8. Tim’s visit is an attempt to rekindle the affection he once had for Nora, although his past infidelities cast a shadow on their reunion. However, their family gathering is abruptly disturbed when Bosworth and his associates invade their home, selecting it seemingly at random, and start exploiting the family’s vulnerabilities.
While Nancy puts on an act of innocence, FBI agent Brenda Chandler grows increasingly suspicious of her actions, closely surveilling every step she takes. In a desperate gamble, Nancy decides to flip and makes a deal with Chandler, willing to betray Bosworth in hopes of facing lesser charges.
As the tension escalates, young Zack tries to flee through a window just as the family’s real estate agent arrives to discuss closing on the property. Yet, Bosworth has other sinister intentions, forcing the agent into the house and then murdering him. Meanwhile, Albert, one of Bosworth’s men, overwhelmed by anxiety and drenched in blood, chooses to flee on his own. His escape turns disastrous when he is spotted by two college girls who promptly alert a local gas station owner, leading to his brutal demise at the hands of the police.
As Nancy’s urge for safety intensifies, she begs Agent Chandler to provide her with a weapon, unwittingly triggering events that will change everything. Chandler, having foreseen this possibility, takes measures to disarm Nancy, neutralizing the threat. The mood thickens as Nancy approaches the Cornell residence, which feels charged with looming danger. What was once a tranquil environment swiftly devolves into chaos, as gunfire erupts, hitting Wally, leaving him fatally wounded as he collapses against Nancy, who is left reeling.
In the midst of this turmoil, Tim grabs Wally’s gun, his efforts stark against the unfolding mayhem. Meanwhile, Bosworth continues to keep Nora captive, his ruthless demeanor glaringly apparent. Oblivious to the fact that Tim has cleverly unloaded the gun, Bosworth embodies the danger of the situation.
As tensions peak with the confrontation nearing its end, Tim drags the desperate criminal outdoors, where Bosworth stubbornly refuses to surrender as FBI agents shout commands. Ultimately, he faces the consequences for his obstinacy, meeting a gruesome fate that begs the question of bravery versus sheer folly.
