A young Punjabi woman, Sweety Chaudhary, finds herself caught in the traditional expectations of her family to marry. While attending a wedding in Delhi with her father, Balbir Chaudhary, she encounters Kuhu, a vibrant girl, and her brother Raza (Akshay Oberoi). Their bond deepens as they share stories and aspirations, leading Raza to invite Sweety to study in London as his family prepares to relocate.
Fast forward a year, Sahil Mirza, an aspiring but struggling playwright, grapples with his father’s disapproval. Despite emerging from a wealthy background, he strives for recognition on his own merits rather than relying on his father’s fame. During a clandestine visit to observe a rehearsal, Sweety inadvertently gets entangled in a chaotic chase, and in a twist of fate, Sahil comes to her rescue amidst a misunderstanding involving her brother Babloo.
When Sahil learns more about Sweety’s family dynamics, including their life in Chaudhary Manor and her father’s unfulfilled culinary dreams, he becomes determined to reconnect with her. However, the family’s protective atmosphere proves challenging. Babloo’s revelation about Sweety’s supposed relationship with a Muslim boy complicates matters further, leading to miscommunication and assumptions.
Sahil’s insistence on visiting the manor to deliver a letter adds to the comedy and confusion, ultimately convincing Balbir that Sahil is the Muslim boyfriend, further entrenching the misunderstandings within the family. Despite Sweety’s desire to pursue her education abroad, Babloo’s jealousy and traditional attitudes hinder her.
At a familial celebration, Chatro, a lively caterer and amateur actress, becomes a conduit for stories shared at the table, while the family continues to speculate on Sweety’s affections. As Sahil takes bold steps to express his feelings, he discovers the reality of Sweety’s heart and her bond with Kuhu, marking a pivotal moment in their dynamic.
Faced with familial pressures, Sweety contemplates a surface-level relationship with Sahil to please her family, yet her heart lies elsewhere. She navigates her feelings for Kuhu while Sahil channels his creativity into a play that reflects their true story, titled “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga.” This endeavor unveils layers of authenticity and poses questions about love, acceptance, and breaking free from societal constraints.
In a dramatic climax, Balbir’s discovery of Sweety’s diary unveils her struggles with loneliness and understanding, prompting a transformative acceptance. With Balbir standing by Sweety and Kuhu as they pursue love openly, the audience’s response solidifies a new path for them all.
Amidst the backdrop of cultural norms and familial ties, Sweety and Sahil’s story resonates as a testament to authenticity, support, and the courage to embrace one’s truth, leading to Balbir opening a restaurant and embarking on a fresh romance with Chatro. Ultimately, the narrative culminates in a celebration of love’s many forms, leaving a joyful imprint on both their lives and the community.
