Plot Summary

The movie begins with an intense high-speed police chase that culminates in a shooting in South Central Los Angeles. The officers involved, Brian Taylor and Miguel Zavala, are not just colleagues but also close friends serving in the LAPD. Taylor, a former Marine, records their police operations for a film project, much to the displeasure of some of his fellow officers.

As they respond to a call about a public disturbance, they confront a gang member named Tre, who hurls racial slurs at Zavala. In a display of bravery, Zavala accepts Tre’s challenge to fight, earning his respect by choosing not to charge him with assault. However, subsequent events lead to tragedy when Tre’s gang suffers a deadly attack from the Surenos, killing one of Tre’s friends. The following day, the duo discovers the vehicle used in the drive-by shooting but are met with resistance from homicide detectives.

Soon after, they respond to a missing children report. Shockingly, they uncover a crack house with the children confined in a closet. Later, while investigating a noise complaint at a party filled with Latino gang members, Taylor has a tense encounter with a gang member known as Big Evil, who turns out to be connected to the recent drive-by shooting.

Meanwhile, Taylor starts a romantic relationship with Janet. Sensing a lead, Taylor follows a lead to Big Evil’s mother’s house. When they pull over a suspicious truck leaving the premises, the driver draws a weapon, leading to an arrest. Inside the truck, they find elaborately decorated firearms and a large sum of cash.

Days pass and the officers heroically rescue children from a blazing house fire, earning praises and the Medal of Valor. Using this incident as leverage, Taylor persuades Zavala to delve deeper into the house connected to their earlier investigation. Here, they arrest another suspect who possesses ornate firearms and guards a cell of human trafficking victims. Their investigation takes a perilous turn when ICE agents arrive, revealing connections to the notorious Sinaloa Cartel and warning the officers to “lay low” for their safety.

Zavala’s wife Gabby, played by Natalie Martinez, gives birth to their first child. When the officers receive an urgent help call from Sook, Van Hauser’s rookie partner, they rush to the scene to find Van Hauser alive but severely injured. They soon discover that Sook is leaving the force, raising tensions about their safety as gang threats swirl.

As Taylor and Zavala navigate the challenges of their dangerous work, Taylor marries Janet, who soon becomes pregnant. The night of their wedding sees Zavala promising to look out for Janet should anything happen to him. The next day, a routine welfare check leads them to a horrific discovery of drugs, dismembered bodies, and a cartel message.

Meanwhile, ICE identifies footage from Mexico showing a cartel member issuing a contract on the officers’ lives. Unbeknownst to them, the gangsters who targeted them earlier are plotting their assassination. In a show of solidarity, Tre warns them they are “Green lit,” but they dismiss his warning as mere speculation.

Tragedy strikes when the officers respond to a reckless driver and find themselves ambushed by the gang members they had encountered before. During the chaotic exchange, Taylor is shot in the hand and goes into survival mode as he battles his way out – only to be fatally shot while trying to protect Zavala.

As the film concludes, the funeral reveals a twist: Taylor survived due to Zavala shielding him during the ambush. Struggling to give a eulogy, he can only muster the words, > “He was my brother.” The film ends with a flashback to a time of camaraderie between the two officers, showcasing the bonds of friendship that defined their brave but dangerous lives as they set out to “Fight crime.”
