As the clock ticks down to the end of the First World War, a British officer, referred to solely as “John Smith,” finds himself within the confines of an English asylum. His memories, clouded by the toxic fumes of warfare, reduce him to nothing more than a lost statistic among countless lives wrecked by conflict. When an announcement declares the end of the war, the caretakers of the asylum vacate their posts, granting Smith a fleeting opportunity to escape unnoticed into the nearby Midlands town of Melbridge.

In Melbridge, he encounters the enchanting singer Paula Ridgeway, whose vocals have the power to captivate anyone.
