The Last Airbender 2010

The film opens with 14-year-old Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her 15-year-old warrior brother Sokka (Jackson Rathbone) at the South Pole, near a river. They come across the tracks of a tiger seal, leading them to discover something glowing beneath their feet. When Sokka strikes the ground with his boomerang, an ice sphere emerges, revealing a 12-year-old boy named Aang (Noah Ringer) and his flying bison, Appa, trapped inside. Unbeknownst to them, Aang is the long-lost Avatar—a revered figure whose duty is to maintain balance in the world across different incarnations. His absence has allowed the Fire Nation to wage war against the other nations, including the Air Nomads, Water Tribes, and the Earth Kingdom, in their quest for domination.

Zuko (played by Dev Patel) is an exiled prince of the Fire Nation searching tirelessly for the Avatar to deliver him to his father, Fire Lord Ozai (Cliff Curtis). When Zuko notices the light that signals Aang’s release, he, along with several soldiers, storms the Southern Water Tribe, demanding the villagers to present their elder, mistakenly believing the Avatar must be aged. However, Aang selflessly reveals his identity and voluntarily surrenders to Zuko, under the condition that the village will be left in peace.

Onboard Zuko’s ship, Aang undergoes a test conducted by Zuko’s Uncle Iroh (portrayed by Shaun Toub) to confirm his identity as the Avatar. Upon learning that he will be imprisoned after passing the test, Aang cleverly escapes using his glider, reuniting with Katara and Sokka aboard his flying bison.

The trio then travels to the Southern Air Temple, where Aang learns he had been frozen in ice for a century. He discovers the devastating news that the Fire Nation has destroyed all Air Nomads, including his beloved guardian, Monk Gyatso (Damon Gupton). Grief-stricken, Aang enters the Avatar state, venturing into the spirit world where a dragon spirit advises him to journey to the Northern Water Tribe to master Waterbending.

While navigating a small Earth Kingdom town under Fire Nation control, Aang’s group is arrested after Katara tries to aid a young boy from a patrol. This act ignites a rebellion among the oppressed Earthbenders, reminding them of their rightful claim to the earth. Additionally, Katara acquires a Waterbending scroll, which she uses to refine her Waterbending skills and assist Aang in mastering Waterbending as they strive toward the Northern Water Tribe, liberating more villages along their path.

In a twist, Aang is ambushed and captured at the Northern Air Temple by a peasant in cahoots with a band of Fire Nation archers, led by Admiral Zhao. Yet, in a surprising turn of events, a masked figure known as the “Blue Spirit” rescues Aang from captivity. It is soon revealed that Zuko is behind the mask, and after a failed assassination attempt on his life orchestrated by Zhao, Zuko, with Iroh’s guidance, sneaks aboard Zhao’s prominent ship as it heads to the Northern Water Tribe to execute their nefarious plan.

Upon their arrival, Aang and friends are received warmly by the Northern Water Tribe residents. Sokka quickly forms a bond with Princess Yue (Seychelle Gabriel), while Aang begins intense training with Waterbending master Pakku (Francis Guinan). Just as progress is made, however, the Fire Nation fleet, led by Zhao, launches an attack. Zuko intensifies his own pursuit of Aang, ultimately capturing him as Aang enters the spirit world to seek guidance from the dragon spirit.

As the conflict reaches its climax, Iroh bears witness to Zhao’s capture of the moon spirit, Tui, who, along with its water spirit counterpart, takes on a fish form. Despite Iroh’s desperate objections, Zhao kills Tui, robbing the Waterbenders of their abilities. In a profound act of sacrifice, Yue reveals that the moon spirit granted her life, willingly choosing to return that life as she passes away. With her loss, Zhao meets his fate at the hands of the Waterbenders while Aang generates a colossal wave to repel the Fire Nation’s assault.

Embracing his destiny, Aang prepares himself alongside Katara and Sokka to venture deeper into the Earth Kingdom, where they aim to find an Earthbending mentor for Aang. Meanwhile, upon learning about Zhao’s fate and Iroh’s defection, Fire Lord Ozai dispatches his daughter, Azula, to hunt down both Zuko and Iroh, as well as to deal with the Avatar, all before the imminent arrival of Sozin’s Comet.
