What was Dr. Jack Gramm's profession?

Plot Summary

In 1997, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Jack Gramm (played a pivotal role) as an expert witness in the trial of Jon Forster, infamously dubbed “The Seattle Slayer” by law enforcement officials. Gramm’s testimony and psychiatric insights were instrumental in securing a guilty verdict for Forster, who was found responsible for the attempted murder of Janie Cates and the brutal killing of her sister Joanie. The victim’s apartment was invaded, with Joanie being drugged, hanged upside down, and ultimately murdered. Following the conviction, Forster taunted Gramm with a chilling warning: “Tick-tock, Doc.” Nine years later, as Forster’s execution date loomed, a series of gruesome torture murders occurred, eerily reminiscent of his earlier crimes.

Gramm, now an instructor at the University of Washington, was summoned by both a lawyer from the Attorney General’s office and FBI Special Agent Frank Parks to shed light on the new string of killings. The latest victim, Dale Morris, revealed to be a former student of Gramm’s, shared a connection with him having attended the same party the night before. As Gramm navigated his daily routine, he received a disconcerting phone call from an unknown individual using a voice modulator, warning him that he had mere minutes – precisely 88 minutes – to live. He promptly reported the ominous message to his secretary, Shelly, requesting a risk assessment profile of potential suspects.

The morning’s teaching session was disrupted by yet another threatening phone call, further fueling Gramm’s suspicion about his students, particularly Mike Stempt. The dean of students, Carol Johnson, intervened to report a bomb threat, prompting an evacuation. In the aftermath, Gramm discovered that both his car and classroom had been vandalized with menacing graffiti. As he pondered the escalating threats, his teaching assistant, Kim Cummings, volunteered to aid in tracking down the perpetrator.

The pair arrived at Gramm’s condo, where a package awaited them. The package contained an audio recording of Kate, Gramm’s young sister, desperately crying out for help before her brutal murder. Gramm deduced that someone had accessed his secure files to obtain the haunting tape. Kim’s ex-husband, Guy LaForge, suddenly appeared at the apartment door, brandishing a gun; however, he was swiftly shot and killed from behind by an assailant clad in a motorcycle helmet. The sudden onset of smoke triggered a fire alarm, and the shooter fled into the crowd outside. Shortly after, Gramm’s car exploded, having been rigged with an explosive device.

As Gramm (played by) navigates the treacherous landscape of deceit and manipulation, he finds himself entangled in a web of intrigue that threatens to consume him. His narrative takes a dark turn when he recounts to Kim how his sister met her untimely demise decades prior, a gruesome crime that unfolded with precision, ticking away at an agonizing pace of exactly 88 minutes.

In the aftermath of this morbid revelation, Gramm and Kim visit Sara Pollard, a woman whose fleeting intimacy with Gramm had ended just hours earlier. But upon arriving at her apartment, they are met with a horrific sight: Sara lies lifeless, with evidence pointing unmistakably to Gramm as the perpetrator. The phone rings, and Carol’s ominous voice pierces the silence, issuing a chilling demand that Gramm meet her at his office.

Meanwhile, Shelly’s arrival at Sara’s apartment yields a startling revelation: she suspects Lauren was behind the theft of the incriminating audio tape featuring Kate’s final moments. As Kim vanishes from the scene, only to reappear with a menacing threat eerily reminiscent of Carol’s earlier taunt, Gramm is left to decipher the labyrinthine motives driving these mysterious figures.

Through a meticulous examination of prison visitation records, Gramm uncovers the truth behind Forster’s appeals attorney, “Lydia Doherty,” and his suspicions converge on the startling conclusion that Lauren was complicit in framing him, acting under Forster’s directives. The phone rings once more, this time with Kim’s urgent instructions to meet her at a remote location on campus.

As Gramm arrives at the designated spot, he finds Carol suspended over the edge of the seventh-floor balcony, her life hanging precariously in the balance. Tied and gagged nearby lies Kim, held hostage by Lauren, who demands that Gramm confess to providing false testimony during Forster’s trial. Just as all hope seems lost, Special Agent Parks appears on the scene, dispatching Lauren with a swift shot.

The ensuing chaos sends Carol and Lauren tumbling from the balcony, their struggles halted only when Gramm manages to save Carol from certain doom. In the aftermath of this violent confrontation, Gramm flashes back to poignant moments spent with Kate and Janie Cates before pocketing the incriminating device that had captured his coerced confession.

With a knowing glint shared with Parks and Kim, Gramm departs the scene, his fate now inextricably linked to Forster’s. The clock ticks away, its relentless rhythm echoing through the narrative like a deadly countdown: tick-tock, tick-tock, you have exactly 12 hours to live.
