As Michael Vaughn (Rich Sommer) traverses the United States marketing his pseudopsychic services, his accomplice, Chelsea (Joanne Froggatt), secretly plays an integral role in his web of deceit. However, their illusion begins to unravel as Vaughn’s parents, Sam (Ed Harris) and Joyce (Amy Madigan), grow disillusioned with their son’s lack of genuineness, leading to emotional distance from his performances. Simultaneously, Chelsea’s own growing discontent mounts as the meager rewards of their mediumship business fail to justify the ethical compromises they’ve made.
The precarious situation shifts when Nathan (Clifton Collins Jr.), a disturbed man burdened with a dark past, abducts Vaughn and takes him to a secluded hideout. In this dire predicament, Nathan divulges a shocking truth: he was responsible for a murder two decades earlier and now requires Vaughn’s help to make contact with the tormented spirit of James Bishop.
As Vaughn is confronted with this grim reality, Nathan leads him to the forgotten resting place of Bishop’s remains. Seizing the moment amid a frenzy of media attention, Vaughn orchestrates a televised séance to exploit the revelation, propelling him to new heights of fame.
However, Chelsea begins to sense an undercurrent of deception as she witnesses her partner’s newfound celebrity. Her apprehensions mount when she realizes that despite Nathan’s threats, Vaughn continues to manipulate his audience without remorse. The truth comes crashing down when Stacy (Amanda Crew), the long-lost daughter of Bishop, initially exposes Vaughn’s fraudulent nature during a live broadcast.
In a fit of rage and betrayal, Nathan retaliates by kidnapping Chelsea, insisting that Vaughn rectify the situation or risk losing her forever. In a frantic bid to rescue his partner, Vaughn devises a dangerous ploy that results in Nathan’s accidental death at the hands of a torque wrench. With Nathan’s body disposed of and law enforcement closing in, Vaughn is faced with the impending fallout of his betrayal.
Chelsea, unyielding in her disillusionment, chooses to sever ties with Vaughn, leaving him alone as he anticipates arrest. As the façade surrounding Michael Vaughn’s career crumbles, the true depth of his moral decay comes to light, leaving a trail of heartbreak and destruction in its path.
As Vaughn sits in a prison cell, reality strikes him anew when he glimpses Chelsea on a television screen, comfortably recounting their tumultuous romance to none other than Dr. Phil. Eagerly sharing their story, she spins their entangled past into a best-selling narrative, transforming his misdeeds into her ticket to fame. Witnessing this, Vaughn’s simmering resentment and fury bubble to the surface, hinting at an explosive confrontation awaiting him once he regains his freedom.
