Graham Marshall, a dedicated executive at a well-known advertising agency, is left shattered after being passed over for a promotion in favor of his intolerable protégé, Bob Benham. This disappointment is heightened by the dismissal of his friend George Brewster, whose misfortunes led to the very position that Graham had coveted. At home, his wife, Leslie, a self-centered socialite fixated on her perception of his ambition, unleashes a torrent of criticism, her harsh words piercing his already bruised ego like cold steel.

On the fateful night of his disappointment, while waiting on a lonely subway platform, Graham becomes the target of a relentless panhandler who accuses him of being wealthy and stingy. As the verbal assault escalates, Graham’s pent-up frustration boils over, resulting in a shattering moment where he pushes the man onto the tracks just as a train roars forward. The horror of this act goes unnoticed by him as he slips into the night, feeling a confusing mix of relief and exhilaration coursing through him.

In the days that follow, a dark transformation takes hold of Graham as he plots to settle the score with those who have wronged him. He begins to recall a near-death experience involving dangerous electrical wiring in his home, which inspires him to stage a “freak accident” for Leslie. Her death only strengthens his resolve, leading him to target Bob Benham for his next plan of retribution.

Graham’s scheme unfolds with chilling precision: he rents a vehicle using George’s corporate account, obtaining powerful sedatives from a dubious courier. Disguised as a romantic outing with Stella Anderson, a coworker who harbors feelings for him, he drugs her drink. The following morning reveals their entangled bodies, providing Graham with a solid alibi.

Simultaneously, Bob Benham and his sycophantic companion unknowingly approach a meticulously prepared trap on Bob’s boat. The booby-trapped gas tank that Graham has rigged leads to a fatal explosion, and as he savors his moment of triumph, he carelessly leaves behind his personal gold-plated lighter on the dashboard.

With the death of Bob now a reality, Graham is called into the office by Mr. Jones, Bob’s former superior, who extends the promotion Graham had once yearned for. Accepting the offer with a sense of vindication, Graham’s thoughts drift to the causes of Bob’s demise. Just then, Mr. Jones reveals his newfound passion for flying, further solidifying Graham’s feeling of control over his life.

However, as Graham adjusts to the chaos of his new role, he finds himself facing an investigation led by Police Lieutenant Laker, convinced of his involvement in the recent deaths, despite the absence of tangible evidence. Graham’s world unravels further when he discovers his prized lighter is missing, leading him down a tense path to recover it. Amid this turmoil, Stella’s unease about Graham’s nature deepens, fueled by her growing suspicions.

During a critical interrogation with Laker, Stella’s worries about Graham crystallize, prompting her to retrieve the lighter from the rental company and arrange a meeting with Laker at the very subway station of Graham’s earlier crime. As Graham arrives, anxiety grips him during a confrontation with Stella. A troubling exchange hints at possible violence, but ultimately, she gives him the lighter and departs.

Now, with his reputation seemingly restored, Graham exits the subway—only to cross paths with Lt. Laker once more. In a brazen display of contempt, he lights a cigar with his retrieved lighter right before Laker’s eyes, quashing any remaining suspicion of his guilt. Unbeknownst to Graham, George, in the throes of despair from his forced retirement, has succumbed by overdosing on Graham’s tranquilizers, a tragic turn of fate that might have implicated Graham.

As he revels in the illusion of victory, Graham seeks to transfer Stella to Los Angeles, eager to eliminate any lingering threats to his new status. Yet, a final hurdle arises: Mr. Jones refuses to give up his coveted office. In a sinister twist, as Graham narrates his triumphs, Jones’s plane flies over idyllic landscapes only to meet a catastrophic failure. The film concludes with an explosion resonating in the distance, accompanied by Graham’s self-satisfied smirk, hinting at the haunting ramifications of his misdeeds yet to unfold.
