The third installment of the beloved Thin Man series, Another Thin Man unfolds its intriguing narrative two years after the previous adventure. The charming couple, Nick Charles and his wife, Nora, along with their clever son Nicky Jr. and their ever-loyal dog Asta, have just returned to their bustling New York City life after an enjoyable trip. However, their peaceful routine is soon disrupted when Colonel MacFay, the overseer of Nora’s assets, urgently summons them to his remote countryside estate.

With barely unpacked luggage, the Charles family embarks on their journey. As they approach the Colonel’s lavish mansion, Nick’s keen eye catches sight of something alarming—a dead body lying by the roadside. Yet, upon investigating, he discovers that the corpse has mysteriously vanished. This unsettling encounter heightens Nick and Nora’s anxiety about their impending visit to the Colonel’s home. Their unease intensifies as they navigate through security checkpoints guarded by men wielding shotguns, only to discover that the Colonel himself is gripped by paranoia. It becomes evident that Colonel MacFay believes a vengeful figure from his past, Phil Church, is intent on taking his life.

Phil has ominously remarked that he has foreseen MacFay’s death through vivid dreams, which have a track record of coming true. Initially, the Colonel’s fears seem irrational, but the incidents around him fuel an atmosphere brimming with tension. Nick remains skeptical as he enjoys his cocktails, dismissing the absurdity of the Colonel’s claims. However, after a shocking incident during dinner when a fire suddenly erupts in the swimming pool, Nick’s demeanor shifts; perhaps the Colonel isn’t as delusional as he seems.

Determined to uncover the truth, Nick seeks out Phil Church, who is living in a nearby cottage. Just as Phil prepares to depart for Cuba, he expresses an eagerness to share his story with Nick. Unveiling the hidden layers of bias, Phil reveals that Colonel MacFay had previously used him as a scapegoat during dubious dealings, leading to his incarceration. With Phil now free, he harbors a burning desire for vengeance. Their confrontation culminates in a heated exchange, with Nick physically asserting himself in defense of his family against Phil’s sinister threats about dreaming of Nora and Nicky Jr.

Later that night, a gunshot resonates through the estate, plunging it into darkness. Once the power is restored, tragedy strikes—the Colonel is found dead, his throat cruelly cut, just as Phil’s ominous predictions indicated. In a suspenseful twist, Asta, their astute canine companion, discovers the murder weapon, but insists on handing it only to Nick. This sequence of events leads Nick into a treacherous game of cat and mouse, where dangerous figures like Dudley emerge, but ultimately, the police intervention saves him from a grim fate.

Dissatisfied with the authorities’ interrogation tactics, Nick and Nora resolve to take their investigation into their own hands, bringing back to New York not only the Colonel’s adopted daughter, Lois, but also the housekeeper, Mrs. Bellam, as well as the Colonel’s secretary, Freddie—who is secretly in love with Lois. A few days later, the district attorney enlists Nick’s help in investigating the murder case, and he willingly obliges.

In a subsequent detective escapade, Nick discovers Nora at a club, surrounded by intrigued gentlemen. Displaying her own investigative prowess, Nora has built connections that could lead them closer to the truth, specifically to a man who has ties to the enigmatic Dum-Dum. However, things take a chaotic turn when they find Dum-Dum himself. Just as Nick gathers intel about Phil’s potential romantic entanglements, his probing leads him into grave danger when two thugs attempt to eliminate him.

Fortunately, Nick anticipated trouble, and Lieutenant Gould is on hand to thwart the attack. Things escalate when a procession of ex-cons appears at Nick and Nora’s apartment, thrown by Nick’s previous encounters with these individuals—turning an intimate dinner into a rambunctious birthday celebration for their son, Nicky Jr. Amid the joyous chaos, tensions rise as Phil Church reappears, threatening their lives unless they remain silent. But before he can make his escape, he’s shot dead, further complicating the case.

As Nick pieces together the puzzle, he realizes that with Phil’s demise, the key to solving the enigma lies in front of him. Using his newfound clues, he gathers all the suspecting characters, unpacking the web of deceit surrounding Colonel MacFay’s death.

Finally, leveraging evidence from Linda Mills’ apartment, Nick comes to a shocking conclusion: the shot that was fired was part of an elaborate setup involving a delay mechanism, implicating none other than Lois aka Linda Mills as the mastermind behind the murders of both MacFay and Phil. Lois had been living a duplicitous life as the devoted daughter and a reckless city party girl, ensnaring Phil in a dangerous love affair while scheming for her inheritance. Betrayal and murder ensue as she tries to eliminate anyone standing in her way.

In a tense confrontation, Lois confesses her nefarious deeds, but before Nick can revel in his victory, she reveals a dire threat involving their precious son, Nicky Jr. As chaos descends, Nick’s once unshakeable confidence wanes, but a stroke of fortune and the unyielding spirit of love guides them through to resolve the conflict amidst the lingering uncertainty of parenthood. In the end, the Charles family can savor their long-awaited peace, finally reuniting with their beloved Asta and relishing the tranquility that has evaded them since their arrival at the Colonel’s estate.
