What is the name of the drilling machine used by Dr. Abner Perry and David Innes?

Plot Summary

As Dr. Abner Perry (character) and David Innes pilot their ingenious Iron Mole drilling machine through the Welsh mountainside, a catastrophic confluence of events unfolds. The duo’s test run is abruptly interrupted when the intense heat emanating from the magma crust surrounding the device knocks them unconscious, relinquishing control to the unforgiving forces beneath. As they regain consciousness, Perry and Innes find themselves hurtling deeper into the Earth’s core, where the temperature gradually drops, allowing them to regain their bearings. Eventually, they emerge onto a peculiar surface, teeming with flora and fauna reminiscent of prehistoric times. However, their wonder is short-lived, as they are promptly captured by the Sagoths – ape-like creatures driven to enslave every human tribe in this mystical realm.

The Sagoths, subservient to the telepathic Mahars (Pterodactyls with parrot-like beaks), are a species of flying reptiles wielding mind control powers. David’s sympathies for the enslaved Princess Dia eventually lead him to incite a riot within the magma mines, where he is captured alongside Ra, another rebellious slave. As the two prisoners face certain doom in the arena, a behemoth dinosaur is unleashed upon them – only to be felled by Perry’s shouts from the crowd, revealing its vulnerable spot. David and Ra not only vanquish their monstrous opponent but also claim victory over an attacking Mahar, earning the admiration of the enslaved masses.

Inspired by this turning point, Innes, Ra, and Dia join forces to rally the oppressed tribes, galvanizing them to work together in their struggle for liberation. Meanwhile, Perry dedicates himself to instructing the humans on the art of constructing and wielding bows and arrows. As the human slaves unite against their oppressors, they ultimately triumph over the Mahars and subdue their minions.

With their mission accomplished, Perry and Innes prepare to return to the surface world with Dia in tow. However, despite her deep affection for Innes, Dia is convinced that she cannot adapt to life on the surface – just as Innes finds himself ill-suited to her own world. A heartbroken Innes ultimately accepts her decision, choosing instead to return solo with Perry to the United Kingdom.

As fate would have it, a slight arithmetic error leads to an unexpected and astonishing outcome: the Iron Mole bursts forth from beneath the White House lawn, leaving the two unsuspecting Secret Service agents stationed at the entrance in a state of utter bewilderment. The usually stoic lawmen, clad in their crisp black uniforms, are left staring aghast as this behemoth of metal and machinery rises like a mechanical behemoth from the very earth itself.
