In the 1960s, the visionary Mercurio Arboria established the Arboria Institute, a pioneering research center aimed at harmonizing science with spirituality. This initiative sought to lead humanity into a New Age, promoting the concept of “Serenity Through Technology” and everlasting happiness. Fast forward to 1983, where we find Dr. Barry Nyle, Arboria’s devoted protégé, at the helm of the Institute. His primary focus is on Elena, a young woman confined to the lower levels of the facility. Elena possesses extraordinary psychic abilities and communicates through telepathy, but Nyle suppresses her powers using a luminous prismatic device.

Throughout the day, Nyle subjects Elena to invasive “therapy” sessions, during which she desperately pleads to reunite with her father, but he callously dismisses her requests. By night, while Elena employs her psychic gifts to secretly observe television shows through a wall monitor, Nyle goes home to his wife, Rosemary, who seems to exist in a perpetual haze induced by marijuana. Nyle himself is reliant on a cocktail of prescription drugs, further highlighting the disturbing environment both he and Elena inhabit.

In a sinister attempt to provoke an emotional reaction from Elena, Nyle taunts her with memories of her deceased mother. This leads Elena to discover her mother’s photograph hidden under her bed. Later, nurse Margo finds Elena’s case notes, which reveal disturbing symbols and images that suggest Nyle’s disturbing fixation on her. While trying to conceal this discovery, an ash from Margo’s cigarette alerts Nyle to her knowledge.

Nyle orchestrates a confrontation between Margo and Elena, ultimately deactivating the prism. In a shocking turn of events, Elena telekinetically causes Margo’s demise by forcing her brain to rupture, much to Nyle’s delight. For a fleeting moment, he allows Elena a taste of freedom, but quickly reactivates the prism, incapacitating her again. Subsequently, he summons a “Sentionaut”, an entity enveloped in a red suit, which implants a tracking device into Elena’s neck before returning her to her cell and disposing of Margo’s body.

In a meeting with Arboria—who has succumbed to senility and drug dependency—Nyle commits an act of murder, a traumatic experience Elena perceives through their telepathic link. Flashbacks unveil a deeply unsettling truth: Elena’s mother, Anna, was both Arboria’s wife and collaborator. In a sadistic twist, Arboria subjected a young Nyle to a perilous procedure designed for transcendence, leading to a horrific outcome where he emerged insane and ultimately killed Anna. Undeterred by his daughter’s fate, Arboria forces baby Elena into the same nightmarish experience.

Returning home, Nyle sheds his deceptive appearances, revealing a bald head and ominous black irises. Convinced he has evolved into a superior being from “Beyond the Black Rainbow,” he gruesomely murders Rosemary, pushing his thumbs into her eye sockets.

Meanwhile, in a fierce bid for freedom, Elena manages to escape her confines. Navigating through unseen dangers and evading both the prism’s detection and sinister Sentionauts, she finally glimpses the night sky for the very first time. Nyle, now wielding a ceremonial dagger referred to as “The Devil’s Tear-Drop,” discovers her absence and embarks on a frantic pursuit through the surrounding wilderness, even killing two “heshers” in the process.

A climactic confrontation ensues in a secluded clearing where Nyle desperately entreats Elena to return to him. Utilizing her psychic prowess, Elena ensnares Nyle’s feet, leading to his tragic demise after he inadvertently falls and strikes his head against a rock. Free at last, she finds herself on a serene suburban street, guided by the flickering light of a television set.

In a haunting post-credits scene, we catch a glimpse of a Sentionaut action figure resting quietly in a child’s bedroom, leaving the audience with a chilling sense of unresolved tension.
