The film opens with a chilling disclaimer, revealing that the recovered footage was found in the Black Hills Forest in Maryland on May 25, 2014. The scene cuts to frantic handheld footage of James Donahue, portrayed by James Allen McCune, frantically running through a dark and eerie house. He pauses when he seemingly spots a figure resembling his missing sister, Heather, who vanished two decades ago alongside her friends, Josh and Mike, while investigating the legend of the Blair Witch.

James’s friend, Lisa Arlington, played by Callie Hernandez, is producing a documentary that not only explores the Blair Witch legend but also dives into James’s desperate search for Heather. To assist in the film, they enlist their friends Peter Jones (Brandon Scott) and Ashley Bennett (Corbin Reid). During a visit to a nightclub, Peter and Ashley express their concern to Lisa about how much of their footage will be included, wanting to respect James’s feelings.

The group sets out to Maryland to film, spending the night in a hotel before venturing into the ominous woods. They encounter Lane (Wes Robinson) and Talia (Valorie Curry), who claim to have discovered the original footage made by Heather and her friends. Despite Peter’s unease about Lane’s eerie demeanor, they decide to let the couple join their expedition.

Once they reach the forest, they begin to set up camp. Lane shares unsettling tales about the Blair Witch, which leads to laughter from Peter, who finds Lane unintentionally creepy. The group ventures barefoot through a creek, but Ashley suffers a severe cut that Peter must bandage.

As night falls, James is jolted awake by unsettling noises echoing through the woods. Lisa seeks comfort in his tent, and to their alarm, Talia reveals that Lane is missing. They search for him, only to find him looking anxious and disoriented. When morning arrives, they’re horrified to find stick figures hanging ominously from the trees and realize they’ve unknowingly slept in until 2:00 PM. Accusations fly towards Lane and Talia about setting up the figures while they were asleep, prompting the group to consider heading home.

As they attempt to navigate through the forest, they realize they’ve merely circled back to their campsite. Lane ultimately confesses that he hasn’t been truthful about his familiarity with the area and admits that the footage was faked. Frustrated and agitated, James’s friends dismiss Lane and Talia, causing them to leave on foot. Stricken by despair, James clings to the hope that Heather might still be alive.

Lisa tries to scout possible escape routes with her drone, but when the camera becomes lodged high in the trees, they face another crisis: Ashley’s injury worsens, compelling them to stay the night once again in the bleakness of the forest. Peter tends to Ashley as her wound seems to harbor something moving beneath the surface, escalating the terror.

As Peter investigates the midnight sounds in the woods, his flashlight fails, and he becomes increasingly panicked. His frenzied flight leads to a fatal incident when a tree falls on him, followed by an unknown force dragging him away.

James and Lisa, left without Peter, encounter Lane and Talia again, who ominously claim it has been five days since they last met. Disoriented by time, they reluctantly agree to let Lane and Talia stay, despite their lingering doubts. An alarm set for 7:00 AM sounds in the darkness, and the group is horrified to find even more stick figures hanging in the trees and unsettling rock formations on the ground. Tensions flare when Ashley accuses Talia of setting up the stick figures, leading to a shocking incident that leaves Talia fatally bent in half.

In a panic, James and Lisa manage to stick together, but Ashley finds herself alone and in discovery of the drone camera lodged in the trees. As she attempts to retrieve it, a force violently knocks her from the tree, resulting in her abduction.

Rushing towards the sounds of Ashley’s screams amid a sudden downpour and flashes of lightning, James and Lisa find a structure eerily similar to the one from the footage James remembers. While Lisa is hesitant about entering, James charges in, driven by his hope of finding Heather.

Inside, James believes he sees Heather darting through the hallways, but when Lisa joins him, they are plunged into horror. They find Lane in a disheveled state, ranting about obeying “her.” After a terrifying encounter, Lisa manages to fend him off momentarily.

However, as James turns to face a corner, he utters dire words, begging Lisa not to look at “her.” In a final tragic twist, James is taken by an unseen force, leaving Lisa in a frantic bid for survival. She then witnesses an ominous presence that mirrors the stick figures lurking in the woods. Lisa hears James’s last words, “I’m so sorry, Lisa,” before she too succumbs to the horrors that inhabit the house.
