In 2006, Paul Conroy, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, finds himself in a horrifying predicament as he wakes up confined within a wooden coffin. Armed only with a Zippo lighter, a pen, and a BlackBerry phone, he slowly recalls the traumatic events leading to his entrapment. The nightmare began when he and several others were ambushed by terrorists, leaving him unconscious after being struck by a rock. As Paul navigates the darkness of his confinement, he desperately attempts to reach out for help by calling 911 from Youngstown, Ohio. However, he encounters skepticism from the FBI in Chicago and apathy from his employer, all of whom dismiss his harrowing account.

Just when hope seems lost, he receives a chilling call from his captor, Jabir, played by José Luis García Pérez, who demands a staggering ransom of $5 million for his release. Amidst despair, Paul discovers essential items, including a malfunctioning flashlight and a pocketknife, which he utilizes in his frantic quest for freedom. He reaches out to the State Department, only to be informed that government policy forbids negotiating with terrorists; instead, they promise to mount a rescue effort. His employer, aware of the situation, connects him with Dan Brenner, the head of the Hostage Working Group, portrayed by Robert Pattinson. Brenner advises him to conserve his phone’s battery and resist the kidnappers’ demands for a ransom video, cautioning that the media’s involvement could complicate matters.

As Paul’s situation deteriorates, he attempts to connect with his family, reaching out to his mother in a nursing home, only to find that she no longer remembers him due to severe dementia. The horror escalates when Jabir insists Paul produce a ransom video, presenting evidence of his colleague Pamela, played by Ivana Miño, in grave danger. When Jabir lowers the ransom to $1 million after Paul’s refusal, the situation becomes even more dire as Paul battles a live snake inside the coffin, which he manages to kill.

Desperation sets in as Paul navigates the grim reality of his surroundings. Switching the language on his BlackBerry to English, he sends a desperate voicemail to his wife, Linda, relaying crucial information. Despite recording the ransom video, the kidnappers tragically execute Pamela, leaving Paul to deal with the aftermath, including the public airing of the heinous act. Distant explosions rock his confines, and he learns that his employer has retroactively terminated his employment based on baseless accusations, cutting off any hope of escape.

In a twist of fate, Brenner informs him that the explosions were caused by bombings nearby, and his captors may have been neutralized. In a moment of clarity, Paul records a final message for his wife and son, cherishing their memories as he resumes a daunting battle against impending doom. Jabir’s horrifying demands escalate further, leading Paul to a grotesque act of mutilation as his captor threatens his family.

Just as hope appears to flicker with the sound of digging near his coffin, Paul’s senses betray him as he realizes it was merely a hallucination of his dire situation. Yet, Brenner’s team works tirelessly to locate him, and a glimmer of hope arises when they learn from an insurgent about a man buried alive. Paul speaks with Linda, reassuring her that he shall overcome this nightmare.

As the sand fills his coffin to perilous levels, the rescue team reportedly arrives at the burial site. With every ounce of strength, Paul struggles to stay composed, but in a devastating twist, the team mistakenly uncovers the coffin of Mark White, another man claimed to have been rescued. Realizing the grim truth of his fate, Paul resigns himself to despair, ultimately succumbing to the darkness as the last remnants of light fade away.

In a poignant post-credits scene, a flickering lighter reveals the name “Mark White” inscribed on the lid of the coffin, a haunting reminder of Paul’s ultimate sacrifice and silent plea for survival.
