Celeste and Jesse’s love story begins in high school, where they fall for each other and eventually tie the knot at a young age. Their relationship is highlighted through captivating photo montages, culminating in a poignant moment when Celeste walks away from Jesse during a lively party.

Though they share a strong bond, Celeste is a successful trend analyst who owns her media company, working alongside her partner, Scott. Recently, her firm has signed Riley Banks, a pop star whom Celeste has openly disdained in the past. Conversely, Jesse is an unemployed artist who lacks urgency in pursuing a stable career.

When Celeste chooses to separate, she assures Jesse that they can still remain friends. Despite this, Jesse harbors deep feelings for Celeste and hopes for a reconciliation. Their friendship continues to flourish post-separation, raising eyebrows among their close friends, Beth and Tucker. While Beth expresses her concerns about the unusual nature of their relationship, Celeste insists that maintaining this connection is in their best interest. Meanwhile, their friend Skillz agrees with the others, suggesting they both need to progress in life.

Initially, Celeste feels satisfied with their arrangement until a night spent together leads to her realization that reconciliation isn’t in the cards. In a moment of despair, Jesse decides to leave, disregarding Celeste’s apologies. As time passes, he begins dating Veronica, who ultimately becomes pregnant. Disturbed by Veronica’s pregnancy, Celeste confides in Beth, who wonders if Celeste might be second-guessing her decision to divorce. To cope, Celeste immerses herself in exercise and explores new romantic interests.

On a date with Max, she unexpectedly encounters Jesse, resulting in an uncomfortable situation; however, Max hits it off with Jesse. Drawing from his past experiences, Max advises Celeste to take her time before diving into dating again.

Once in yoga class, Celeste meets Paul, who initially irritates her with his advances. However, when they meet again at a gathering, she warms up to him, leading to a budding romance. During this time, Jesse begins taking responsibility for his relationship with Veronica as the pregnancy progresses. Celeste eventually comes to the painful realization that her choice to divorce Jesse was hasty and selfish, igniting a desire to reconnect. When she confesses her feelings to him, a confrontational argument erupts, leaving both parties in distress.

Later, Celeste receives a call from Riley, her client, asking for her help. Upon meeting, she learns that Riley is heartbroken over a cheating boyfriend, sparking a newfound friendship rooted in shared pain. At a nightclub with Riley, Celeste discovers that her controversial logo design has unexpectedly captivated a substantial portion of Riley’s fanbase, leading her to think that she could potentially rise to fame like Lady Gaga.

At Beth and Tucker’s wedding, Celeste makes a heartfelt toast, urging them to cherish one another, be patient, and work hard at their marriage—reflections of what she wishes she had implemented in her own relationship. Jesse is visibly moved by her words and thanks her afterward.

On a karaoke night, Celeste confides in Paul, expressing her need for healing following the divorce, to which he agrees. Finally, she and Jesse sign the divorce papers, reminiscing over shared jokes, leaving their lawyers puzzled by their apparent ease with the situation. As they part ways, Celeste wishes Jesse the best and inquires about his feelings for Veronica. Jesse affirms his love, and Celeste encourages him to fight for their marriage as they share one last kiss, encapsulating their bittersweet journey.
