Michael Newman, portrayed by Adam Sandler, is an architect happily married to his longtime love, Donna, and they have two children, Ben and Samantha. However, Michael often finds himself bending to the will of his overbearing boss, Mr. Ammer (David Hasselhoff). Determined to provide his family with a better life than he had, he frequently sacrifices precious time with them for work.
In a surprising turn of events, Michael visits Bed Bath & Beyond in search of a universal remote. During his visit, he accidentally falls onto a bed and stumbles into the elusive section labeled “Beyond.” There, he encounters a mysterious clerk named Morty, who hands him a unique remote control, cautioned that it can never be returned. To Michael’s astonishment, he discovers that this remote has the power to manipulate time and experiences.
Initially thrilled, he uses the remote to fast-forward through arguments with Donna, skip ahead to rid himself of a cold, and even bypass a family dinner to prioritize work. Morty soon warns him that while Michael’s mind jumps through time, his body remains on “auto-pilot,” mindlessly carrying out daily activities. After a conversation with Mr. Ammer, who hints at a potential CEO position, Michael rashly accelerates to that future but is shocked to find that a year of his life has vanished.
As time progresses, Michael uncovers the consequences of his hasty decisions—he finds himself in marriage counseling, grieving the recent loss of his beloved dog, and grappling with an estranged relationship with his family. The remote continues to control his life, moving him through fast-forwards he did not command, leading to disheartening revelations about his future. As he faces ten years later, he realizes he is now a lonely CEO, morbidly overweight, and divorced from Donna, with his children resenting him.
When seemingly transported again after a turbulent visit to his old home, Michael is thrust into a future where he learns of deep losses and dramatic changes—a cancer diagnosis for Donna, a heart attack, and more. He meets with Morty again, who reveals himself as the Angel of Death. In his desperation, Michael evokes the need to change his path, pushing forward to witness the future wedding of Ben, his son, in 2031.
The shock of seeing Samantha call Bill, her stepfather, “Dad” ignites another heart attack within him. Morty’s ominous warning reverberates in his mind as he fights to reach out to his family, determined to ensure they never repeat the same mistakes he made. In a heart-pounding moment, Michael collapses but makes a powerful declaration that family is paramount.
Miraculously, he awakens back in the present where it all began, believing his harrowing journey was a vivid dream. He reconciles with his father and recommits to Donna, Ben, and Samantha, pledging his love and prioritizing them over work. As he cherishes this new beginning, he discovers the remote laying on his kitchen counter alongside Morty’s note, which hints that he would ultimately find his way back. Choosing not to be undone by the lure of the remote, he discards it, ready to embrace a renewed life with his family. In the amusing credit scene, a holographic Michael messes with the remote once more, hinting at the chaotic adventures that might still lie ahead.
