Five years ago, in 2003, Ray Koval (played by Clive Owen), an MI6 agent, found himself entangled with Claire Stenwick (portrayed by Julia Roberts) at a lively party in Dubai. Unaware of her true identity, he attempts to charm her, only to be deceived when Claire drugs him and makes off with classified documents.

Fast forward three years to Rome, where Ray and Claire’s paths cross once more for an extended stay in an opulent hotel. Claire’s missed flight leads Ray to believe she deliberately orchestrated their encounter, while Claire suspects Ray has ulterior motives for their reunion. Both contemplate leaving their government roles to pursue lucrative opportunities in the competitive private sector, hoping to leverage their intelligence skills for personal gain. After exploring various business ideas, including ventures in double-crust pizza, they settle on cosmetics and personal care, though their exact plan for capitalizing on their new path remains elusive.

As the weeks go by, a sense of caution hangs over Claire and Ray. Both are seasoned in betrayal, and even as they grow closer and devise plans to assume new identities post-operation, a cloud of suspicion dampens their romance. They decide to quit their government jobs simultaneously, but a tense moment in London leaves them feeling abandoned by one another.

Claire is soon recruited by Equikrom, landing a position in counter-intelligence at Burkett & Randle. Over a year later, Ray joins Equikrom’s team as an intelligence officer, with Claire now functioning as one of his agents. Recognizing that Ray’s employer will be monitoring him for signs of loyalty, he and Claire rehearse a scenario where they feign a casual meeting in New York, echoing their initial encounter in Rome. However, unbeknownst to them, Claire’s superiors at Burkett & Randle are spying on her, compromising her cover. The CEO of Burkett & Randle, Howard Tully (interpreted by Tom Wilkinson), opts to retain Claire despite her dual allegiance, aiming to manipulate her against Equikrom.

Tully feeds Claire false intelligence while Duke Monahan (Denis O’Hare) and Pam Fraile (Kathleen Chalfant) scrutinize the information Ray brings back from Claire. In a twist of irony, as they continue their charade, Ray and Claire’s dialogue is again overheard, convincing Ray’s employer of his fidelity. Tully delivers a rousing speech to his team, framing his company as pioneers against deceit and theft, laying the groundwork for a new product launch that stirs anticipation within Equikrom.

Meanwhile, Claire relays key information to Equikrom’s CEO, Dick Garsik (Paul Giamatti), igniting a scheme to plunder Burkett & Randle’s developments. Duke and Pam investigate the rival lab with skepticism, convinced there’s no groundbreaking work transpiring. On the trail of a supposed product acquisition, they map out Burkett & Randle’s recent purchases, leading them closer to Tully’s operations.

With a shareholder convention looming, Garsik becomes aware that Tully intends to announce a groundbreaking product just ahead of their meeting. In a bid to uncover the truth, Ray travels to the Bahamas with an Equikrom team to confront Ronny Partiz (Christopher Denham), who has information about Tully’s new product. Yet, Claire also arrives with her own team, thwarting their plans due to casino fraud accusations.

As Ray provides Claire with critical intel, she emerges as the hero in the eyes of Burkett & Randle, and Tully feigns gratitude for her efforts in safeguarding their product’s secret—a cure for baldness. Armed with this insight, Claire informs Garsik, who prepares to unveil the development to shareholders while anticipating significant corporate gain.

With high stakes at play, Claire and Ray come together at the Zürich Airport, each clutching a version of the formula intended for a Swiss company, with the promise of a $35 million transaction in sight. Just as excitement peaks, the Swiss reveal that the product is merely a benign lotion, leaving Ray and Claire stunned by the extent of their manipulation. Ultimately, they find solace only in one another, accompanied by a congratulatory bottle of champagne from Tully, as they confront the bittersweet outcome of their elaborate deception.
