Empire of the Ants Quiz: Test your knowledge on the 1977 film 'Empire of the Ants' and its thrilling exploration of human and ant interactions.

What communication method do ants rely on, as described in the movie?

Plot Summary

As the cinematic journey commences, a fascinating primer on the intricate social dynamics of ants is presented, highlighting their reliance on pheromones as a means of communication. This phenomenon is likened to an irresistible force that elicits a predictable response, leaving no room for individual discretion. Yet, in stark contrast, humans are freed from such deterministic constraints. However, this brief respite from the biological imperative is soon disrupted by the deliberate dumping of radioactive waste into the ocean, an act that sets in motion a chain of events with far-reaching consequences.

As the opening credits fade to black, our attention shifts to the enigmatic figure of Marilyn Fryser (Joan Collins), a shrewd land developer with a penchant for spinning gold from worthless dross. Her latest venture is a group tour of “prime beachfront property” on a nearby island, which, in reality, holds little value but serves as a clever ruse to entice unsuspecting investors. The expedition takes an unexpected turn when the group stumbles upon the lair of gargantuan ants, whose sheer size and ferocity leave them scrambling for survival.

As panic sets in, the survivors find themselves fleeing through the wilderness, their numbers dwindling with each passing moment. Eventually, they stumble upon the quaint island town, only to discover that it has become a hub of activity centered around a local sugar factory. The ants, now under the thrall of their cunning queen, are seen indulging in the sweet nectar, their very presence exerting a hypnotic control over the townspeople. However, a small band of rebels manages to escape the clutches of the ants and sets fire to the sugar factory, destroying the hive and allowing them to make a daring getaway by speedboat, leaving the island and its dark secrets behind.
