Plot Summary

As the reception of American rock star John Allman’s latest album plummets, he makes a spontaneous decision to take a temporary hiatus from the spotlight. Seeking solace in isolation, John purchases a secluded residence perched precariously near a cliff in Cyprus. Several days into his self-imposed exile, a sudden intrusion by an individual at the edge of the cliff sets off a chain reaction within John’s psyche. Initially convinced that the interloper is a pesky paparazzo, John’s ire escalates until the unexpected happens: the trespasser takes a fatal leap from the precipice.

Local authorities, led by no-nonsense Police Captain Manoli (Tony Demetriou), arrive on the scene to investigate the tragedy. As John learns that the cliff has gained notoriety as a hotspot for suicide attempts, he begins to grasp why his isolated retreat was so affordably priced. The captain cautions John about the alarming frequency of these incidents and offers his phone number in case any future events unfold.

As John ventures into town to stock up on provisions, he displays a haphazard approach to meal planning, much to the chagrin of the local shopkeeper. His attempt to purchase pre-made pasta sauce is met with amusement by the vendor, who takes pity on John’s culinary ignorance and offers to prepare a bespoke selection of ingredients for his isolated abode.

The next day, Melina (Ali Fumiko Whitney), a talented singer employed at a local eatery, arrives at John’s doorstep bearing his requested groceries. Upon finding John in a state of intoxication, attempting to construct a barrier around the cliff’s edge, she recognizes the famous musician and intervenes. As John opens up about his motivations for abandoning his life in America, Melina proposes to introduce him to eligible local women who share his age demographic.

In a bid to reconnect with his manager Jimmy (Clarence Smith) and alleviate any concerns about his sudden disappearance, John makes a phone call, revealing his whereabouts to the relieved party.

As the mother of the cliff-jumping man approaches, John reaches out to Manoli, and soon, the woman finds herself in good hands. The tavern in town becomes the perfect setting for a reunion, where John is introduced to a table of familiar faces, including Sia (Agni Scott), a woman he had crossed paths with during his time in Cyprus many years prior. As it turns out, Sia is not only a doctor on the island but also a kindred spirit who shares a deep connection with John’s music.

As they catch up over Melina’s enchanting melodies, the others at the table recognize John as the renowned rock star and can’t help but bring up his most iconic song - the one about falling in love on the beach. Despite his protests that it was merely an artistic expression rather than a real-life inspiration, John makes his exit, leaving Sia to ponder their shared past.

Later, Sia tracks John down and confronts him about her perceived lack of recognition from him. She probes for answers about why he’s returned to Cyprus, but John finds himself at a loss for words. The tension between them is palpable as they suddenly surrender to a passionate kiss. Sia spends the night at John’s home, sneaking out early the next morning.

As Sia tends to her duties at church, her sister Koula (Lea Maleni), the local shop owner, becomes privy to Sia’s recent encounter with John. John himself later persuades Sia to join him for dinner, unaware that his colleagues are buzzing about his past conquests among the modeling elite.

Meanwhile, Melina delivers a thoughtful gift - Aftersun cream - to John, who confesses to her that he penned his famous song “Girl on the Beach” after meeting the love of his life in Cyprus. He reveals that this enigmatic woman was different from the fame-hungry fans he encountered later, as she loved him for who he truly was.

As Sia arrives at John’s home ahead of dinner, she finds herself face-to-face with her daughter Melina, who has emerged from the kitchen. The unexpected arrival of Manoli’s sister only serves to heighten the tension, leading Sia to storm out in a fit of jealousy, convinced that John is somehow involved in an affair with not one but two women.

As the truth slowly begins to unravel, it becomes clear that John and Sia had once shared a deep connection, but her fear of his groupies drove her away when she followed him to New York City to reveal her pregnancy. Instead, she confided in Melina, telling her that her father was a chance encounter with a tourist - the truth, however, is far more poignant.

As the evening wears on at the tavern, Melina extends an invitation to John to harmonize with her in a duet. Mid-performance, John’s improvisational skills take over, and he reveals to Melina that Sia had been keeping a profound secret from them both - one that changes everything. The discovery of this truth sends Melina reeling, and she lashes out at Sia for concealing the truth. However, Sia remains steadfast, refusing to back down until the two sit down and engage in a much-needed conversation. It is then that Sia shares her reasoning behind keeping this secret from John - she believed that his rockstar lifestyle would be detrimental to Melina’s well-being.

Meanwhile, John has been working on a new song with Jimmy, who is convinced that it holds the key to their musical comeback. Later that night, John stumbles upon Anna (Athina Roditou) perched precariously at the edge of a cliff, and he succeeds in dissuading her from taking the leap. As they strike up a conversation, John discovers that Anna is pregnant - a revelation that sends him into overdrive. He invites her to stay with him for the night, and in the morning, they embark on a journey to inform Anna’s parents of the impending arrival. The news proves too much for Manoli to handle, and he asks his wife to give him some space.

As the days pass, John finds himself growing closer to Anna as they work together to prepare for the new addition. Their bond is strengthened when they spend the day constructing a fence at John’s house - a project that takes on new meaning in light of Manoli’s own experiences. However, their joy is short-lived, as Anna goes into labor and they rush to the hospital.

In a poignant moment, Sia mistakenly believes that the flowers and balloon John brings to the hospital are intended for her. It isn’t until he explains that they are, in fact, meant for the new baby that she finally begins to open up. As John prepares to leave Cyprus, Melina coaches him on the nuances of a popular serenade that is traditionally sung to Sia. Although she is visibly moved by his words, Sia remains resolute in her decision to keep him at arm’s length.

In the days that follow, John gifts Melina with a new song he has written, one that she shares with Sia. This time, however, Sia is moved to forgive John and reconcile their differences. As John settles into his cliff-side home with Sia by his side, he finds himself surrounded by a newfound sense of community and purpose. Meanwhile, Melina’s own musical career takes off under the guidance of Jimmy, and she begins to make a name for herself in the industry.
