Frankenstein's Army 2013

As the war-ravaged expanse of Europe swirls beneath the impending shadow of World War II’s final throes, a steadfast Soviet reconnaissance team, helmed by the experienced Novikov, sets out on a treacherous mission to dismantle a fortified German sniper position. This courageous group consists of Sergei, Vassili, Alexei, Ivan, Sacha, and the indefatigable propagandist cinematographer Dmitri. After successfully executing their objective, the squad receives a haunting Soviet distress signal that reverberates through the barren silence, met with an unsettling absence of response from high command, which plunges them into dire uncertainty.

Despite skepticism regarding the likelihood of Soviet entities in the vicinity, Novikov, compelled by a sense of responsibility, instructs his team to investigate the enigmatic transmission. As they approach the specified coordinates, Dmitri’s camera documents a disturbing series of occurrences: inexplicable Nazi fatalities, a blackened convent infused with the stench of death, and bizarre machinery that seems to defy all rational explanation.

Upon reaching their location, the squad stumbles into an abandoned church. Here, a mere chance triggers an appalling ‘zombot’ event—an undead creature adorned with grotesque mechanical enhancements that twist the laws of nature itself. This horror claims Novikov as its initial prey, brutally disemboweling him before the remnants of the team manage to vanquish the monstrosity. In the wake of this tragedy, Sergei steps into the role of leader; however, he immediately faces a challenge from Vassili regarding his command. Nevertheless, the rest of the squad stands in solidarity with Sergei, determined to press on despite the chaos engulfing them.

As the soldiers’ focus shifts to an elderly caretaker who stumbles into the derelict church, they surround him with an air of calculated tension. Under the scrutinizing eye of Dmitri, the caretaker begs for mercy, desperately imploring them not to take his life. His vehement claims that the village lies in ruins, ravaged by the horrific creations birthed from “The Doctor,” only ignite Vassili’s fury. In a shocking display of brutality, he mutilates the man’s finger, extracting a questionable promise to guide them to the origin of the Soviet distress signal. Tragically, this supposed cooperation culminates in disaster—the caretaker leads them into a trap, resulting in Ivan suffering life-threatening injuries from another zombot attack. The squad narrowly escapes with their lives, only to confront a group of German survivors: Fritz, an elderly patriarch; Hans, a young, naive victim; and Eva, a compassionate nurse, who have been evading the ruthless assault of the undead.

Though Vassili calls for their elimination, Eva passionately argues for their lives in exchange for her assistance with Ivan’s wounds. Tragically, despite her efforts to save him, Ivan succumbs, triggering Vassili’s grief and igniting a violent outburst as he attacks Eva, leaving her unconscious. In the thick of this turmoil, Alexei is suddenly ambushed by a stealthy zombot, his screams reverberating through the church as more of the undead converge on the stricken group.

As panic unravels, the survivors retreat into the ancient catacombs beneath the church. There, Sergei uncovers a chilling truth: Dmitri has orchestrated a façade from the very beginning, employing a radio jammer to sever communications with the higher command while broadcasting the false distress signal that lured them into this harrowing entanglement. This revelation breeds outrage among Sergei and Vassili, who are poised to punish Dmitri for his deceit. Yet, the cunning Captain asserts his authority by revealing his true status as a Red Army officer, wielding his rank as a weapon to intimidate them and threaten their families with dire retribution should they oppose him.

As Dmitri leads the group deeper into the twisting catacombs, they encounter increasingly bizarre and disturbing anomalies, eventually falling upon a chute that spirals them further into the depths of a sinister factory complex. Eager to reveal the origins of these monstrous entities, Sergei and Vassili compel Hans to investigate the chute’s mysteries; they tragically witness his gruesome slaughter at the hands of a zombot that subsequently emerges, preying upon its own kin. Although they manage to destroy this horrifying adversary, Fritz is claimed by the relentless assault, leaving only Sergei, Vassili, and Sacha to conspire a mutiny against Dmitri’s command, casting him and his equipment into the very depths of the factory they sought to uncover.

As Dmitri struggles to regain his footing, he is ensnared in a deluge of zombots. In a frantic escape attempt, he encounters Ivan, now a mindless automaton, who delivers a crushing blow that renders Dmitri unconscious. Upon regaining his senses, Dmitri faces the watchful eye of Dr. Viktor Frankenstein, an eccentric descendant of the notorious Victor Frankenstein, who proudly claims responsibility for these abominations. The doctor’s maniacal enthusiasm is matched only by the eerie splendor of his facility, where he guides Dmitri through a macabre tour, recounting his ancestor’s work and his own deviations from his Nazi overlords’ directives.

As they navigate the sinister corridors, Dmitri glimpses Hans, now a zombot, alongside Sergei and Vassili, whose horrific dismemberment serves as a grim token of Frankenstein’s grotesque experiments. The atmosphere is thick with tension, accentuated by the distant rumbling of artillery fire, which Dmitri clarifies as the advancing Red Army.

With a bold resolve to sway Frankenstein to the Soviet cause, Dmitri implores him to aid in ending the war. However, Frankenstein reveals his proposal for an experiment aimed at a swift resolution: fusing together half of a Soviet and a Nazi brain. Assisted by Eva, now a zombot herself, Frankenstein lobotomizes a captured Nazi soldier, then turns his attention to Sergei, who fervently vows vengeance against Dmitri as the doctor begins his ghastly operation.

As the surgery approaches its climax, Sacha emerges from the shadows, having skillfully evaded capture, and shoots Frankenstein dead. In the wake of their leader’s demise, Dmitri urges Sacha to release him; however, Sacha dismisses his cries, seizing both Frankenstein’s head and Dmitri’s camera as grim trophies of his successful mission. Amidst the ensuing tumult, Sergei’s reanimated form rises from the operating table, its haunting gaze locked upon Dmitri, who ultimately meets a horrific fate at its hands.

The narrative wraps up with an image of Sacha standing proudly beside Stalin, a testament to his unwavering dedication and ruthless ambition, now rewarded by a well-deserved promotion.
