They influence him to use his father’s rifle to “scare” their targets, including the people Miguel and Jose have come near. The tension escalates quickly when Brad fires shots from Sean’s rifle near the two men, startling everyone and drawing attention from Olivia and Roy. When authorities later identify them, Jose has Olivia’s blanket in his possession, tying him to the earlier encounter. Miguel, meanwhile, is arrested while working in a landscaping job, a fate that overturns his life and prompts a difficult conversation with his wife back home.

Paulina, facing the harsh reality of crossing the border alone, decides to make the journey herself. She joins a group guided by coyotes, and the voyage into Phoenix turns brutal: the group is beaten and held for ransom after being coerced through bribed officials and a brutal criminal underworld.

Sheriff Randall Hunt informs Roy that Miguel has been arrested for first-degree murder, a charge that seems tied to the chaotic shooting near Olivia. Roy succeeds in securing Miguel’s release, and he brings him back to his ranch, where the two men begin to rebuild a fragile trust.

Back on the property, Miguel notices Olivia’s horse’s pen is dirty, and he begins a practical cleanup. Roy joins him, and their shared labor leads to a self-imposed sense of responsibility. The two men slowly open a dialogue about responsibility, loss, and the possibility of justice beyond the courtroom. Roy then invites Miguel to stay on and help repair the fence that marks the border area, offering to hire him to maintain it from the Mexican side.

The moment arrives when a sniper—still unseen—aligns to take aim at Miguel.
