In a distant future where Mars has been transformed into a technological marvel by a pioneering corporation, Detective Melanie Ballard (Natasha Henstridge) embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the truth behind the abrupt silence from the Martian mining camp. Accompanied by her fellow police officers, she arrives at the desolate outpost, only to find it abandoned except for the enigmatic prisoner, Desolation Williams (Ice Cube), whose cryptic laughter seems to foreshadow their impending doom. Initially intended to escort Desolation back to headquarters, the group decides to investigate the eerie silence before proceeding with their mission.

As they delve deeper into the mine's labyrinthine tunnels, they stumble upon a lone individual trapped within an encapsulated mining car, warning them against opening the compartment. Ignoring his plea, they trigger a catastrophic sequence of events that sets off a desperate struggle for survival. Witnessing the gruesome murders of their comrades by hulking figures with grotesquely scarred and tattooed visages, the remaining police officers grasp the gravity of their situation and must make a swift exit.

Desolation's cryptic explanations reveal that the Martian soil contains an ancient structure, which was inadvertently unleashed by the miners' excavations. The red dust released from this anomaly has a profound effect on those who breathe it in, transforming them into violent psychopaths driven to construct weapons and slaughter their uninfected counterparts. These mutated individuals undergo a grotesque genetic transformation, emerging as twisted but formidable warriors.

As the situation spirals out of control, Melanie and her comrades devise a plan to eradicate the genetically modified ex-miners during their hasty retreat from the mine. However, this strategy devolves into chaos, leaving only Melanie and Desolation to reach headquarters alive. Confronted with the harsh reality that her superiors will never believe her harrowing tale, Melanie must confront the impending threat head-on.

The red dust eventually reaches the corporate stronghold, bringing with it a new wave of terror and destruction. Forced to fight for their lives once more, Melanie and Desolation must confront the monstrous creations they had initially sought to destroy.
