On a disturbing voyage in space, a terrified man stumbles upon his comrade’s lifeless body, only to be violently tossed around by unseen forces. Meanwhile, on a desolate planet, Mitri, the oracle of the “game,” converses with the Master, a mysterious figure whose head is engulfed in a blue energy field. Upon receiving alarming news of lost contact with the spaceship Remus near the planet Organthus, Mitri warns that the Master’s scheme is perilous. Nonetheless, the Master insists on heading to Organthus, commanding Mitri to assemble a spaceship crew.

Later, aboard the Quest, Commander Ilvar introduces himself to Captain Trantor as she activates the ship’s systems. However, as Trantor recklessly wipes the ship’s preset hyper-jump coordinates for a speedy escape, the crew discovers that she bears the burden of being the only survivor from a catastrophic event on the Hesperus. They survive the hyper-jump and touch down on Organthus, but not without their systems going haywire upon nearing the planet. Trantor seeks help from Dameia, the tech chief, and despite continued malfunctions, they manage to land on Organthus. Upon preparation for their mission, the crew’s second-in-command, Baelon, asserts authority over his colleague Cabren, a psychic named Alluma, rookie Cos, and the crystal darts expert Quuhod.

The team boards the Remus on the surface, eagerly searching the ship for answers. When isolated, Cos encounters a terrifying insect-like creature, fleeing until he reunites with Baelon and Alluma. Meanwhile, Cabren and Quuhod uncover the remains of a Remus crew member. Tragically, as the team retrieves the corpse, Cos lags behind and falls victim to a monstrous insect.

Back on the Quest, while Dameia and Ranger, the assistant technical officer, conduct autopsies on both Cos and the Remus crew member, Alluma senses an unsettling presence that vanishes with Cos’s demise. Their scanners reveal that the Quest’s malfunctions stem from an energy signature emanating from a singular location, prompting them to investigate. Trantor, Ranger, and the cook Kore remain on board as others venture out, leading to the discovery of a mysterious pyramid structure. Commander Ilvar divides the crew: he, Cabren, and Dameia will explore the pyramid’s outer limits, while Baelon heads up a team with Alluma and Quuhod.

As the crew climbs the pyramid, Ilvar grimly acknowledges his age but insists on lowering himself into a hole to survey it further. However, he meets an ominous fate when he’s attacked and killed by a creature emerging from a wormhole. Cabren, feeling the rope slacken, descends to find Ilvar’s empty harness, signaling tragedy. As Baelon’s crew scales the pyramid, Quuhod improvises with a crystal dart to pry open a door, but when Cabren and Dameia join them, they share the grim news of Ilvar’s death. Dameia admits her aversion to worms as they enter the pyramid, only for Quuhod’s crystal dart to shatter, leaving them trapped.

Inside the pyramid, tensions flare as Baelon dismisses Alluma’s sense of danger while Dameia checks on Quuhod. At the entrance, the door reopens and the crystal dart reassembles, viciously attacking Quuhod. Severely injured, he sacrifices his own arm in a frantic attempt to escape but ends up perishing from a dart thrown by his own severed limb.

Meanwhile, on the Quest, Ranger voices his worry about Trantor’s absence to Kore, and they begin searching the ship. On Organthus, Dameia is horrified to discover Quuhod’s body, now infested with worms. In a desperate act, she incinerates them but inadvertently unleashes a massive worm that assaults her.

Kore later strikes Ranger unconscious, revealing Trantor in the weapons room, now acting erratically. Their shared past complicates matters, leading to a tension-filled confrontation. Trantor’s psychotic break escalates as she shoots an airlock open, meeting her demise. As the team finds Dameia’s corpse, now grotesquely altered, Baelon decides it’s vital to head back to the pyramid despite Alluma’s desire to flee.

Within the labyrinthine tunnels of the pyramid, Alluma hesitates but ultimately follows the group. Cabren leads, but as they traverse the treacherous path, Baelon encounters a sinister entity and is killed, his body hurled into the abyss. A power struggle ensues as Ranger and Cabren clash philosophically, revealing deep-seated trust issues while facing manifestations of their fears brought to life by the pyramid.

As tension escalates, they discover that the ancient structure serves as a haunting educational tool for a long-lost civilization, designed to teach children to wield control over their fears. Confronted by the past and present dangers, Cabren grapples with forging ahead, propelled by a storm of emotions. At the apex, Cabren confronts Kore, who possesses mastery over the pyramid’s energy. In a tragic twist of fate, Cabren learns of Kore’s past and the responsibility that comes with power. The climactic battle forces Cabren through harrowing experiences with his fallen friends as he confronts his innermost fears, ultimately leading to a confrontation with Kore that culminates in anguish and revelation.

As power ignites around Cabren, he is confronted with the choice of embracing his new role as Master or rejecting it entirely. In a final, desperate act, Cabren kills Kore and, in doing so, transitions into the new Master of the pyramid’s dreadful game, forever changed by the events on Organthus.
