Plot Summary

In Bangalore, Sriram Venkat (Imran Khan), a self-absorbed individual with a penchant for his own charm, has just returned from studying architecture in the United States. His father, seeking to temper Sriram’s arrogance, decides to marry him off to a traditional woman, Vasudha (Shraddha Kapoor). Although Sriram agrees to the union, Vasudha is hesitant, having genuine feelings for Kamal, a social worker with no fixed abode.

To win Vasudha over, Sriram regales her with tales of his past conquests, including his all-consuming love for Dia Sharma (Kareena Kapoor), a social worker he met at a Delhi wedding. It was there that Dia, a firebrand with a passion for justice, used Sriram’s jacket to create the illusion of pregnancy in order to clear traffic congestion on the road. Entranced by her spirit and determination, Sriram became smitten, only to be rebuffed when Dia informed his girlfriend, Jyoshna, about his affections.

Months later, Sriram encounters Dia again at a mall opening in Bangalore, where she’s fighting against corruption and advocating for children’s rights. Impressed by her conviction, Sriram begins dating her, initially captivated by her street-smart antics but eventually growing claustrophobic due to the intensity of their relationship. As their bond deepens, Sriram accompanies Dia on a visit to a site where she hopes to establish an orphanage.

Meanwhile, Sriram’s fixation on material possessions becomes apparent as he laments his father’s refusal to purchase him an Audi. Unbeknownst to Dia, Sriram has secured the property behind the mall by leveraging his family connections with influential builders. One evening, Sriram confronts Dia outside her hotel, revealing his ulterior motives for their relationship. The revelation sparks a heated argument, culminating in Dia’s decision to end their long-term partnership.

As their romance falters, Sriram labels Dia a hypocrite, accusing her of hiding behind her family’s wealth and influence rather than genuinely immersing herself in the struggles of the less fortunate. This confrontation marks the beginning of the end for Sriram and Dia’s tumultuous relationship.

As Sriram’s nuptials with Vasudha reach their climax, Vasudha confronts him with the harsh reality that his heart still belongs to Dia, rendering their union impossible. Faced with this uncomfortable truth, Sriram makes a hasty exit from the ceremony and sets off to seek out Dia at her rural retreat in Jhumli, Gujarat.

Upon arrival, he finds Dia dwelling amidst the rustic landscape, her spirit as untamed as the terrain. Sriram’s desperation to win her back is palpable, and he vows to remain by her side until she agrees to return with him. However, Dia’s ire remains simmering, refusing to forgive Sriram for his past transgressions.

Undeterred, Sriram sets out to win her trust once more. He turns his attention to the village’s beleaguered infrastructure, proposing a grand bridge project to connect the community and bring prosperity to its inhabitants. Initially hesitant, the village head Bhavtesh Bhai (Anupam Kher) is persuaded by Sriram’s determination, but only after extracting a hefty toll from the villagers for himself.

As the project gets underway, it becomes clear that Bhavtesh’s motives are far from altruistic. His self-serving agenda is starkly contrasted with that of his father, a Gandhian stalwart who silently observes his son’s wrongdoings. Sriram and Dia eventually enlist the aid of local politician Kirti Bhai to fund their endeavor, only for corruption to rear its ugly head.

In a bold move, Sriram negotiates with Bhavtesh to sell the 10-acre barren land at Jhumli in exchange for completing the bridge. This compromise is met with Dia’s ire, and she berates Sriram for compromising her values. The bridge construction proceeds, but Bhavtesh soon reveals his true intentions: he plans to establish a chemical factory on the very same land.

This shocking revelation sets off a maelstrom of emotions within Dia, who realizes that Bhavtesh’s ultimate goal was always to exploit Jhumli’s resources. Her anger and disillusionment are directed at Sriram once more, as she accuses him of repeating past mistakes. Sriram’s ire is piqued, and he departs the village in a rage. However, his determination to complete the bridge and redeem himself drives him back to Jhumli, where the fate of the project and the community hangs precariously in the balance.

As a passionate advocate for the local community, Sriram (actor name) approaches Bhavtesh Bhai and implores him to abandon his plans to construct a factory that would irreparably harm the village’s way of life. However, his words fall on deaf ears, and he is met with brutal force by Bhavtesh’s henchmen, leaving him battered and bruised. Despite this setback, Sriram refuses to back down, and it is only when Bhavtesh’s father, a man who has been eerily silent for years, intervenes that the tide begins to turn. With a mixture of sadness and disappointment, Bhavtesh’s father strips his son of the deed to their ancestral home and urges him to allow the long-awaited bridge project at Jhumli to be completed. Crushed by this public rebuke, Bhavtesh is forced to confront the error of his ways and ultimately halts the construction of the factory, permitting Sriram to complete the vital infrastructure project. As news of this dramatic turnaround spreads, Dia is finally able to see beyond Sriram’s earlier transgressions and reunites with him on the newly built bridge, their love rekindled in the midst of this newfound harmony.

In the film’s poignant conclusion, Dia returns to the city with Sriram, but not before expressing a desire to remain in the nearby village due to ongoing issues with electricity. Sriram, initially hesitant, is won over by her enthusiasm and together they contemplate a new life amidst the rustic beauty of their surroundings. As they walk off into the sunset, Sriram’s sudden about-face sends Dia into fits of laughter, and the camera lingers on their joyous, hopeful faces as they step into an uncertain but promising future.
