A corrupt and self-serving businessman, Carl Ridley, portrayed by Bill Paxton, is on the run from the authorities, dragging his 18-year-old daughter, Pippa, played by Agnes Bruckner, along with him. Relocating from her vibrant Miami lifestyle to the more serene environment of the Cayman Islands is the last thing Pippa wants.
Upon their arrival, Ridley is preoccupied with the rapidly closing banks and his need to find a secure location for his illicitly obtained wealth. Meanwhile, Pippa stumbles upon a local named Fritz, who is played by Victor Rasuk, sleeping in her bed. As he escapes through the window, he inadvertently leaves behind his wallet. In an effort to return it, Pippa encounters Fritz on the beach, where they begin an unlikely friendship, despite his awkward attempts to flirt with her.
Fritz is eager to share the island’s nightlife with Pippa, but he is deep in debt to the island’s gang leader, Richie Ritch, played by Raz Adoti. In a twist of fate, Fritz catches sight of Ridley secretly handling a significant amount of cash wrapped around his body, which leads him to concoct a scheme that inadvertently drags Pippa deeper into her father’s criminal entanglements. Unbeknownst to her, she is inadvertently complicating her father’s already precarious situation.
Simultaneously, there’s another gripping storyline focusing on Shy, portrayed by Orlando Bloom, a native of the Cayman Islands, who is in a secret relationship with Andrea, beautifully played by Zoë Saldaña. As the daughter of Mr. Sterling, a powerful figure on the island, their connection is fraught with peril, especially given the contempt Andrea’s brother, Hammer (Anthony Mackie), feels for Shy. To keep their relationship hidden, Shy’s friend Kimo, played by Mpho Koaho, keeps watch whenever Shy visits Andrea.
During a critical moment on Andrea’s birthday, Shy sneaks into her house, their intimacy interrupted by Hammer’s unexpected arrival. Following a tense escape, Shy bears the brunt of Hammer’s wrath, suffering a horrific acid attack that scars him both physically and emotionally, while Andrea spirals into a world of drugs and despair. As Hammer is incarcerated for his actions, Shy withdraws from the world around him.
In the time that follows, Shy seeks out Andrea again at Richie’s birthday party, leading to confrontation and chaos as he confronts both her and Hammer. As tensions come to a boiling point, Shy obtains a gun and returns to the party, where a tragic turn of events culminates in him taking Hammer’s life.
In the aftermath, while Andrea searches for Shy, convinced that nothing could separate them, she is worsened by the revelation of his violent act, leading to her disgust and rejection. Meanwhile, back at the police station, Ridley faces betrayal and arrest as the FBI closes in, uncovering a dire twist that leaves him and Allen in a precarious situation.
As the story draws to a close, Pippa makes an astonishing discovery of the cash hidden in her possession. The final scenes unfold with Andrea’s preparations for Hammer’s funeral, Kimo offering solace to Shy’s mother, and Shy himself left at an emotional crossroad as he drifts away on his boat, discarding the gun that symbolizes his turbulent past as he cuts ties with his former life.
