Check out what happened in Her Alibi!

Phil Blackwood (Selleck), a renowned American mystery novelist, finds himself stuck in a creative quagmire, struggling to craft a compelling new plot as his sales continue to dwindle. His days blend together in a haze of writer's block, punctuated only by his fascination with the trials he observes in court, where he has become a familiar face among the spectators.

That is when he lays eyes on Nina (Porizkova), a ravishing Romanian murder suspect whose beauty and innocence seem to radiate from every pore. Blackwood is so smitten that he sets out to prove her guiltlessness, taking on the persona of a Roman Catholic priest in order to get up close and personal with her during her incarceration. His observations are further reinforced by the crucifix necklace she wears, a symbol of her faith that would be verboten in her communist homeland.

With the help of his trusted friend and literary agent, Sam (Daniels), Blackwood concocts an elaborate alibi to secure Nina's release under his supervision. He poses as her lover, claiming they are having an affair, and Sam helps him pull off the ruse. However, as soon as Nina is freed, Sam raises a chilling possibility: what if she is not the innocent bystander Blackwood believes her to be? What if she is, in fact, a calculating killer?

As Blackwood's unease grows, he becomes increasingly enthralled by Nina's enigmatic presence. He finds himself simultaneously captivated and terrified as he begins to question whether his suspicions about her are unfounded. Her proficiency with throwing knives, which she demonstrates when she dispatches a pesky insect that ventures too close, only adds to his trepidation. So too do the mysterious phone calls he overhears her making, which send him scrambling to barricade himself in his bedroom, feigning an exercise regimen as a pretext.

As Blackwood becomes increasingly entangled in Nina's web of intrigue, he finds himself struggling to discern reality from fiction. The real murderers – operatives from Romania's Securitate – are plotting to kidnap Nina, while she is secretly working to arrange the defection of her family to America. Amidst this complex tapestry of deception and desire, Blackwood stumbles forward, his creative juices reinvigorated as he begins to weave scenes featuring Nina into his fictional world. His attraction to her is undeniable, but so too are his doubts and fears about her true nature, which continue to simmer just below the surface.

As Nina navigates the enigmatic presence of her newfound ally, she finds herself torn between wariness and gratitude, her skepticism piqued by the mysterious manuscript that had been left behind. The words on those pages reveal a soul grappling with self-doubt, and Nina's empathy is stirred as she delves into the author's inner turmoil. However, it is his apparent lack of faith in her own abilities that leaves her disheartened, having grown to genuinely appreciate this complex individual.

In a striking turn of events, Nina makes a bold decision to flee to the vibrant celebration of Joseph Grimaldi's life, a joyous gathering of clowns that serves as a poignant reminder of the power of art and community. But beneath the surface, Nina's plans are about to be upended by the Romanian agents closing in on her, and it is only Blackwood's timely intervention that stands between them and capture.

As the stakes reach a fever pitch, the culmination of Nina's journey unfolds, with the tension of her decision to defect hanging precariously in the balance. The fate of her family, her future, and her very identity are all on the line as Blackwood rushes to protect her, their bond forged in the crucible of uncertainty.

In the aftermath, a triumphant Nina stands alongside her loved ones, having successfully defected and paved the way for a brighter tomorrow. Meanwhile, Blackwood's literary endeavors yield a stunning success with the publication of his book, "Her Alibi," a testament to the transformative power of love and resilience. As the film draws to a close, it is a poignant reminder that even in the most treacherous of journeys, love can bloom amidst the chaos, leaving behind a profound question: do we ever truly know the person we love?
